It’s been a month since the day Jin brought lasagna to Kazuya. Not much had changed since then. Jin visited Kazuya every day and brought him things that he knew Kazuya liked. Well used to, anyway. These days, Kazuya just takes one look at whatever he brings and either accepts it but makes a show of throwing it away or not accepting it and slamming the door in Jin’s face.
This time however, Kazuya did not do either of those two things. Instead, he leaned on the doorway and faced Jin.
“Stop this,” he said, crossing his arms.
“Stop what?” Jin innocently smiled. He was not done yet with ‘courting’ Kazuya. He suspects he won’t ever be done.
“This.” Kazuya gestured to Jin and the potted plant in his hands. “Don’t you realize that I have no intention ever to come back to you? We’re done Jin. I’m pushing through with the divorce.”
“I told you Kazuya, I won’t stop until you forgive me and come back to me. I’m stubborn that way, remember?” Jin answered, not backing down.
“I know…” Kazuya whispered in a voice so soft, Jin didn’t hear it. Jin was stubborn at times and steadfast in the things he liked. Those were the things Kazuya used to love about him…still love about him. He sighed. “Fine, come with me.”
“You’re forgiving me?” Jin’s eyes shone brightly.
“I don’t remember ever mentioning that,” Kazuya said coldly and headed to his car.
“You have a new car. It’s looks expensive,” Jin commented when he saw the red Porsche.
“Pi bought it for me,” Kazuya said, knowing precisely that it hurt Jin whenever he mentioned Pi. He had noticed the pain and jealousy in Jin’s eyes whenever Pi was around which was almost always. Pi was like a safety blanket to Kazuya and that’s why he needed him around. “He understands what I like.”
Kazuya was aware that he was being cruel but he couldn’t help it. He wanted Jin to leave him alone before the other discovered what really happened more than two years ago. It was his greatest shame and he would fight with every fiber of his being to keep that shame hidden.
Jin flinched when Kazuya mentioned that Pi brought such an expensive car for him. When Jin bought Kazuya’s car for him, Kazuya told him he loved it and rewarded him with a sweet kiss. But maybe Kazuya was just being polite? He felt terrible at the thought.
“Um, Kazuya where are we going?” Jin asked after a while.
“To Tatsuya.”
“Oh.” Jin sighed and mentally prepared himself for some serious bashing. He knew Tatsuya was angry at him. The man had not forgiven him yet for cheating on Kazuya long ago. No doubt, Tatsuya’s pissed as hell now.
------
A loud thud was heard as Jin was thrown off balance and landed on the ground.
“I guess I deserve that.” Jin rubbed his jaw where Tatsuya’s punch hit him and then he looked up at the man whose poker face was impossible to read. “You can hit me as many times as you want but I won’t go away.”
Tatsuya sneered. “You selfish bastard. All you ever thought about was yourself. Did you ever think that maybe Kazuya is better off without you in his life?”
“That’s enough Tatsuya. Let’s go,” Kazuya said, averting his eyes from Jin. He only meant to scare Jin away when he brought him to Tatsuya. He didn’t know his friend would hit Jin so hard.
“Yes, I did. But I can’t…I can’t let go of him even if I’m being selfish,” Jin said in answer to Tatsuya’s question.
He stood out only to be knocked flat on the ground again when Tatsuya delivered another punch, this time to his stomach.
“Tatsuya, enough!” Kazuya yelled, alarmed at the blood that Jin was coughing out.
“Don’t look Kazuya,” Jin calmly said. He knew Kazuya hated violence ever since Hajime, Kazuya’s older brother died over a car accident. Violence reminded him of Hajime’s death.
“Fight, coward!” Tatsuya taunted. He knew Jin could fight him if the man really wanted to. Tatsuya might be a boxer but Jin knew martial arts as well and was bulkier in built. He might lose to Tatsuya but he wouldn’t go down so easily.
However, Jin made no move to attack or even defend his self. He took ever punch, every kick that Tatsuya sent his way without complaint.
Tatsuya delivered one last kick at the slumped form that was Jin. “Pathetic.” He huffed and walked away. It was no use torturing a man who was already torturing himself. If anything, he was doing Jin a favor by being this violent. Jin was asking for a beating and Tatsuya knew that.
Kazuya hardly registered Tatsuya leaving and sat down next to Jin. His hands tentatively reached Jin’s bruised cheek. “You knew he was going to do this, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” Jin admitted. “I wanted him to do this. I deserve it.”
“Why are you doing this Jin?!” Kazuya exclaimed. “Why are you putting up with this treatment?!”
“Because this is the only thing I can do for you. But it’s okay, Kazuya. I’m not leaving you,” Jin assured. He reached for Kazuya’s hand and look at his eyes.
Kazuya saw it all in Jin’s eyes - the longing, the pain, the love - and it hurt him because he knew his eyes showed all of those too.
“Why? Why won’t you leave? Why do you have to make me remember things I’m fighting so hard to forget? Why?!” Kazuya cried onto his hands, his shoulders trembling with every sob that raked his body.
“Kazuya, what are you talking about?” Things he’s trying to forget? Is this about Hajime? Jin didn’t know but he didn’t like seeing Kazuya this distraught.
“I can’t do this anymore Jin…I’m tired of this…”
"Kazuya? Hon, please look at me," Jin begged gently.
“I just want to forget.”
Jin hugged Kazuya and let Kazuya’s tears wet his shirt, his own tears falling at the state his beloved was in. "Kazuya, I don’t understand what it is you want to forget but I hope you’ll remember that I love you. I love you so much. Do you remember? Do you remember how happy we were? I'll make you happy again Kazuya. What do you want me to do? Just tell me. Kazu, just tell me what is it that you want me to do and I'll do it."
When Kazuya finally looked at him, the man's eyes had a blank look to them. "I want to go home, Jin."
"I’ll take you home then."
"No Jin. I want to go home. Without you."
That hurt more than all that Kazuya did to drive him away. “I’ll just make sure you arrive safely there. Then I promise I’ll leave.”
Kazuya handed the car keys to Jin and said nothing. They walked in silence back in the car. Tatsuya went ahead of them earlier but neither of them noticed or commented on it.
----
When Jin turned off the ignition and got off the car, Kazuya was already entering the house.
“Kazuya, wait.”
“I thought you were leaving?” Kazuya asked but it was merely an inquiry, not at all cold or venomous.
“I know. I just…” Jin sighed. “Look, I want to clear up things. I want you to know…to really know what I feel and I want to know what you feel too. I’m confused about a lot of things in our relationship now and I just want to understand. Can you…can you listen for me for a while?”
Inside the house, Pi looked towards the door curiously. He was in the living room, eating apples, when Kazuya arrived and he had heard someone else talking so he decided to investigate. He thought it was one of Kazuya’s friends. They have been coming to visit Kazuya frequently after all. But he was surprised to find a battered Jin standing just outside their front door.
He decided not to interfere. He stood silently at the spot he was at, quietly observing the two men at the door.
“You know, two years ago, when you disappeared I was so scared. I was scared that you weren’t ever coming back,” Jin said, oblivious to the presence of Pi. “When you did, I was terrified still because you came back with another man. For a moment, my jealousy blinded me. I thought I had driven you away and so you found someone better. But you never took off your wedding ring did you? Even now, you’re still wearing it. I just…I want to know what really happened Kazuya. And if turns out that you really just fell in love with Pi…then no matter how much it hurts me I’ll accept it. I was the one who wronged you so I’ll be content if at least you can be happy.”
“What’s the point? We’re divorcing anyway,” Kazuya said instead of commenting on what Jin said.
“I want to save this marriage.”
“You can’t Jin. Our marriage was a like a fragile glass at the very beginning. You can’t fix shattered glass.”
“What if I can?” Jin challenged.
They were engaged in a staring match before Pi broke it by speaking.
“Kazuya, I think it’s time you tell him the truth.”
“Pi!” Kazuya exclaimed, noticing Pi for the first time. Then Pi’s words registered in his mind. “No! Don’t tell him!”
Jin looked at the two, confusion swirling on his face.
Pi ignored Kazuya’s warning and ushered Jin inside the house. “You’ll need to sit down.”
“Pi! No!” Kazuya tried to block Jin’s way but the man merely sidestepped him and sat on the sofa.
Pi nodded. “Jin, the reason Kazuya disappeared on you two years ago was because-”
“Pi, please don’t! Oh God, don’t tell him please!” Kazuya begged.
“You need him Kazuya,” Pi said resolutely before turning to Jin. “Two years ago, Kazuya was gang-raped when he tried to run after you that night you left him alone and drunk. I brought him to LA so he could be given the right treatments by my sister who’s a psychiatrist.”
“Pi! How dare you! How dare you!!!” Kazuya kept hitting Pi’s chest.
"G-gang-raped? That couldn't possibly...You're lying Pi!" Jin gasped. But images of Kazuya drinking and the strewn bottles of beer in the house played on his mind as proof. If Kazuya really had gone out in that state then…
“I wish with all my heart that what I’m telling you is a lie but it isn’t.” Pi caught Kazuya’s hands. “Calm down Kazuya.”
“Is that…is that true Kazuya?” Jin asked but he already knew the answer by looking at his husband. Kazuya was panicking like a trapped animal. “Why didn’t you tell me, Kazuya?”
"For what?” Kazuya snapped. “For you to pity me? No Jin. I don't need your pity."
"Kazuya..." Jin stood up.
"Leave Jin!"
"Kazuya, I have to stay beside you. I won’t leave you again. I’ll be here okay?"
"No!!! I said leave! I don’t need you! Leave! LEAVE!!!"
Pi was alarmed the moment Kazuya reached for the nearest sharp object - the kitchen knife he was using to peel the apples when the two arrived. “Jin you better go for now.”
“No! You will not take him away from me! He’s still my husband damn it!” He reached for Kazuya and that’s when everything went from bad to worst.
“LEAVE. ME. ALONE!!!” Kazuya screamed.
“Jin, move!” Pi warned but it was too late.
Kazuya had already spun forward, the knife he was holding jutted out and ready to strike. His eyes were unfocused and hysterical. Unfortunately, Jin was too close and the knife hit him straight in the side of his body.
Pi gasped as he saw Jin slump down in pain, blood seeping out from where the knife had stabbed him. “Jin, we need to get you to the hospital!”
Kazuya let go of the knife in shock and it fell on the ground with a clang but nobody noticed. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry! Oh God, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to - Oh God Jin!” Kazuya cried and knelt in front of Jin. “I’m so sorry.” He gripped Jin’s arm desperately.
Jin’s vision was swimming due to the intense pain but he ignored it. Kazuya needed him. So many times before, Kazuya needed him and he was a complete and utter asshole for not reacting the way he should have. This time…this time he won’t make the same mistake. “D-don’t cry Ka-Kazu. I’ll be…I’ll be f-fine.” He tried to smile but it might have gone out as a grimace.
“Stay awake Jin, okay? We’ll bring you to the hospital. Kazuya, you’ve got to let go of him,” Pi coaxed.
“No! It’s my fault Pi! I won’t let go!”
“You have to! I can’t carry him to the car otherwise. Come on Kazuya, we’re wasting time,” Pi said sternly.
Kazuya sniffed but let go of Jin. He stayed close however as Pi carried Jin to the backseat of the car and he immediately clutched Jin closer to him the moment Pi let go of the man.
“Stay awake Jin okay? Stay with me. Please, please don’t leave me,” Kazuya sobbed.
Jin felt darkness rapidly swallowing him but he fought with everything he got to open his mouth and talk. He needed to talk. He needed to assure Kazuya. He needed to tell him to stop blaming himself. “K-Kazu…no matter…no matter what h-happens…it’s not…it’s not your fault okay?”
I love you…
Whether or not he was able to say those words to Kazuya, Jin didn’t know because after then, everything went black.
