She screams. She calls him -she calls him, and something would be warm and soft and perfect but it can't be, because she's dying. She tries to stay, she fights for her life, she cries for help.
And he just stares.
He can't move. He wouldn't reach her even if he tried, he knows that -the room is far, the room is not where it should be for him to help her, save her. The room is just in that tiny screen, black and white and the image of some kind of apocalypse on it. Father Kempt is praying, blood stains on his hands, Father Kempt is killing Annie without even holding a knife. And George can feel the wolf inside him, and maybe that's the first time he realizes there's not a wolf, just him. Just himself howling and crying, tears and that blind rage and the desperation, and knowing he should have been there, with her. Saving her.
And that's just the beginning.
Mitchell's gone mad. Nina's gone insane, too. There's just him trying to hold them, put them all together, make them some kind of a family, again. And it is difficult waking up and having to make his own tea, not complaining about ghostly babies or too many mugs all around the house, it's difficult to have that emptiness, that hole in his chest that grows too fast, too much. It's difficult to go on without her.
They can't go back to the house. It is pink and it is old, and it reminds them all of her, of their Annie -who shouted his name when he couldn't help, who listened to him and smiled and told him she would wait, and hasn't. They can't go back to the house because it is haunted, the ghost of a ghost in it, and it is funny -it has to be. It has to be funny because, if not, it'd only be a nightmare. And he's already one, and is so unfair, everything.
Mitchell says he's going to rescue her. He tells him one night, he says she'll be with them once again, and George can only think what if I lost you, too. What if there's just Nina and I, what if she's not what I wanted, not Annie, not you.
He doesn't say anything. There's not too much to say.
When they arrive to the B&B he's still wearing his mask. I'm fine, it says, I'm okay and I'm supporting you, I'm here if you want me to be. Both of you -Nina, Mitchell. Only it's not true. He's shaking, inside, even if he has the woman he loves -he thinks he loves, at least- and his best friend, more like his brother, with him. He's not , because there's something missing -he doesn't have Annie. And that hurts and it's so painful, thinking she's left them alone. Him. And she went screaming his name and sometimes he will wake up hearing her, and he doesn't think the B&B will take the nightmares away.
