Reflections on the fall

I've heard that the real purpose of Kindergarten is to make sure all the kids are on an equal footing for grade one. Some kids, like Kate, come into JK with pretty good academic skills but maybe lacking in some social skills. Other kids may be great at standing in line and getting along with other kids but not able to recite their letters etc. Still others come in with great skills but not able to speak English.

That said, there are academic progress that I can see Kate making in school. She's learned to write her own name since she started the school year. And just in the last couple of weeks she's started to take shots at writing other words. And she's learned a lot about time. They update a calendar every day in class so now she knows what month it is, what day of the month, the day of the week etc.

The new knowledge has definitely impact on our preparation for Christmas as her advent calendar means more to her this year. She understands that it's counting to Christmas and not just some random chocolate treats. It's been a lot of fun opening a window with her each morning. Come Boxing Day, I will likely miss it.
