Lois wondered, after what she had just witnessed; all that rage, his hands needing, wanting to kill, how he could still look so much like a lost little boy.
His body was still trembling, trying to reign in some sort of control. Breaths coming in short, harsh gasps of air, mixing with shattering sobs. Shoulders heaving underneath grief. She felt its icy fingers reach out for her as well, causing a deep, unaccustomed pain inside her; an ache that burned in her stomach. A powerful need that wanted to piece this broken soul back together.
Her right hand tightened around his bicep, trying to infuse him with as much strength and comfort as possible. Her voice lifted with a gentleness she'd never used on him before. “Clark, it's gonna be okay.”
He was shaking his head no before she even finished. Half his face still lived in the darkness when he turned to face her, face wet with tears, guilt buried in the blue depths of his eyes. She's dead. She's dead because of me.
“All she wanted was a chance,” he repeated. The raw, fragile tone of his voice sent a course of empathy drifting through her.
“I know.”
