Later, when he fades into a semi-restful sleep, burying himself within total darkness, Josh's words radiate within him and float into his dreams. But instead of we, there's an I, and as he twists and turns in sweat soaked sheets, she dies again and again and again, because he's always a second too late. Always. There's blood on his hands - it soaks into his clothes - and her beautiful eyes are blank. But they seem to pierce through him anyway, straight to his soul. He never realizes he's crying until a drop lands on her cheek, slithering to the ground.

He wakes with his heart pounding and his head hurting and with the morning sun playing peek-a-boo through his curtains, straining against his eyes before he rolls over to face the wall. The fist he clenches into his sheets, the deep and steadying breathes he takes, help to will his body under control. His heart beat settles into a more normal rhythm, even though he can still feel the dream crawling over him. More out of habit than anything else, he reaches for his phone on the bedside table.
