Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month; don't know if anyone's mentioned that to you over the last couple of weeks. Poets.org has a ton of poetry activities, poems of the day, etc throughout the month. You can also find a lot of people trying to blog a poem a day or even some poetry events in your area.

Poetry related: I just read David Hawkins poem in The Pedestal, "A Report from Juarez." It's really good stuff. I recently wrote a poem on the same subject, even using a little of the same imagery, but in quite a different style. One line of his poem is almost identical to one line of mine, but in a different context and referring to something different. I googled him and found that we've even been published in some of the same magazines. Now I really want to talk to him about our two cousin-like poems, but I can't track down an email address without resorting to stalkerish tactics.

So, if you happen to stumble across this, Mr. Hawkins, I like your poem. I like how dangerous it is. I like that we both use birds in our poems (I recently realized that there are birds in lots of mine, but I don't know why; I don't even like birds). Maybe we'll run into each other at some writerly conclave some day and this will be the weirdest coincidence.
