buying a new one

I'm sorry to hear about Gertrude. Computers seem to know when the most inconvient time is to go.
I don't know if you've heard of newegg.com and tigerdirect.com - they are very good sites for finding the best deal, and their sales change daily. James, a computer obsessed friend, uses tigerdirect all the time, and Dave just bought a digital camera from newegg.
There are a few choices under $500, and a few of them are for new laptops, not refurbished ones.
According to the reviews, you probably want a laptop that comes with Windows XP, since Vista takes more computing power, so that a "bare bones" laptop that runs fine with XP might run sluggishly with Vista.
Thank you so much!!!! I'm looking right now!!! That's awesome :)
I've also found a fairly good deal on the HP website, where I can pick and choose which features I want, which is nice. For example, I don't need a webcam or a graphics card at all, but I would like more hard drive. So, that's a possibility too.

The one at newegg that is brand new with XP (Home edition is fine) - only downside no reviews on it yet. Has a one year warrenty.

A refurbished Lenovo (used to be IBM) T40 with a one year warrenty,
this is my laptop which has served me well for 4 years and I will hopefully have for a long time, but refurbished is never a first choice

I hope you find one that works out!

This one has reviews! Which means it runs Vista at least decently for these people.
