For about two weeks now, I've been looking for a job. I simply can not work at a law firm any longer. The only problem I'm having...finding a job that I would love to do. How does one come to this conclusion? Do people just wake up one day and proclaim "Yes! I want to do ( Read more... )

Everyone has this sort of problem, I guess. What Masters program are you going into? (I am assuming it is in New York since you wanted to do the Fellows program at the same time)

The Working Families Party is a good-guy organization that is hiring, but right now they are only hiring canvassers I think. (People who go door to door asking for money).

Oh, are you looking on idealist.org as well?

Here's my suggestion... take advantage of Daddy's earning power and get one of those internships you avoided in college. If your heart is telling you to help impoverished children, that's totally what you should do. The fact that you said to yourself, "hmmm, what job should I get?" and immediately started calling places that help impoverished children is a pretty big indicator.

Also look at big umbrella charity organizations. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is the UJA-Federation, but I'm sure there's more. They might have openings.

Teaching Fellows is a great program, but it's competitive. Still, the people I've met who do it absolutely love it. Worth looking into.

I didn't realize you were already enrolled in a masters program. For what?

Good luck!!!

I've said it before, but it's worth repeating, this is by far one of the worst periods of your life. And really there's no one to help you through it. Look into yourself. Try to decide what's really going to make you happy and be realistic about it. I walked out of MTV (a good job that was offering to raise my salary to $30 an hour) because it was a soul sucking pit. I now work in a job that treats me like shit, but for some reason I still love the end product so I feel inextricably tied to it. Nothing is ever going to be perfect, but you can do something that’s fulfilling if you know first what makes you happy. That requires knowing a lot about yourself. Plus, only in New York do people define themselves by there jobs. Other people, in say Milwaukee, are just as content being accountants and having fun extra curricular activities on the weekend. My father is an amateur ichthyologist (meaning he raises fish). He’s been all over the world collecting these endangered fish. Some of his fish are now on exhibit at Zoos around ( ... )
