Summary: If it's not the rain keeping Auron awake, then what is it? Crossposted to

Rain in a place like this shouldn’t surprise him, but it doesn’t come often enough for Auron to become accustomed to it. Auron wants to say that this is what has him uneasy, restless. He should be sleeping-they plan on rising early tomorrow to continue the journey-but he can’t. Whatever it is, Auron knows it’s not the storm that is keeping him awake.
Maybe it’s Sin, somewhere out there and waiting to kill them before they can kill it. Sin. Jecht.
Part of him thinks that Jecht should remember him, that he wouldn’t attack Auron, of all people, but Auron dismisses the thought as quickly as it comes. Sin kills who a person really is. Auron can’t be bothered to use hope as a crutch. Sin needs to be destroyed.
He’s come to terms with one day killing Jecht long ago.
The rain continues to beat against the window, and the corner of his mouth flicks upward as he hears Rikku shriek from somewhere down the hall. She hates thunder; she’s of the mind that they should get out of here as quickly as possible.
“She doesn’t like storms,” Yuna murmurs, and joins him to watch the rainfall. Again, he isn’t surprised that she is still awake-Auron hadn’t expected her to sleep easily tonight.
“Do you?”
“The rain keeps me awake.”
They both know she’s lying. She has bigger things on her mind than a storm. “Do you want to marry him?”
“It’s for the good of Spira,” she responds automatically-a rehearsed answer at best. It sounds like she has been practicing in the mirror.
“That isn’t what I asked.”
She fiddles with the ring on her finger and doesn’t answer him. “When will the storm stop?” Yuna asks instead after a moment.
“I don’t know.” He won’t lie to her, but he sees the expression in her eyes and wishes he could.
