In honor of JWalk's birthday, I tried to write smut. But my porn, it was inhibited by presence of toddlers, dogs, and relatives seeking shelter from Hurricane Ike's wrath.
Instead you get 325 words of fluff.

This is fake. And it's domestic schmoop.

Bren's got her index finger in her mouth and she's sucking on the burned tip when she hears the scrape of a key in the lock.
She curses Tom and his inability to keep Jon occupied, curses her own clumsiness. She wasn't expecting Jon back for another half-hour, and she's still wearing the khakis and tank-top she'd traveled in. Her reflection in the window shows her hair going every direction, and she's got a smear of tomato sauce on her cheek.
Jon was supposed to be taking photos of Navy Pier with Tom while Bren got everything ready for Jon's birthday dinner, and she's stressed enough, hoping that he'll enjoy it. They haven't spoken in several days - somehow downtime is not quite as down as Bren thought it would be, not with Shane and Regan planning things - and Jon's voice when he'd left his last message, asking Bren about the photos that surfaced on the internet of Ryan's private birthday dinner, had been quiet, muted.
The thing is, Bren knows Jon is disappointed that she didn't agree to come to Chicago for the family celebration his mom planned, but she'd already set up Spencer's birthday gift/dinner. Unlike Ryan's one-on-one time, Spence's night in the kitchen at Circo hadn't gotten any press. And although Jon's brother Mike knew what she was up to - she'd needed him and Tom in on the plan to get Jon's spare key and Jon out of the apartment for an afternoon - it was supposed to be a surprise for Jon.
She tugs the apron off - and she's going to give Jon shit about his "kiss the cook" kitchen-wear, no doubt - and scurries to the entryway, where she finds Jon standing still, the door hanging open behind him. He's staring at the table (really it's only a tv-table, hiding under a lacy tablecloth) with its wine glasses and candles and such.
"Bren?"
"Um, happy birthday?"
