The Good Wife #4.22 - What's in the box?

May 01, 2013 10:55

I found this episode slightly underwhelming as a season finale (I used to think I hated Alicia’s kids, but I’ve recently realized that, no, it’s just Zach that I hate), but the set-up for next season was so good that I’m thrilled with it nonetheless.

I need to rewatch ‘Red Team, Blue Team’ and revel in the fact that this is what TGW is going to be like all the time from now on. Squee!

So we have Alicia, Cary and Jess in one corner.

Then we have Will, Kalinda and David Lee(?) in the opposing corner.

And we have Diane as a judge (and getting marrrieddddddddd).

And we have Peter hopefully far, far away.

Alicia and Cary have always had my favourite interaction on the show, and I’m so pleased we’ll be seeing their fragile friendship tested by the challenges of setting up a new company. (Also, maybe finally the show will stop sidelining Cary. Dare to dream! Also, also: so much potential for UST. Shh, here’s a secret: I want Alicia to leave Peter for Cary, not Will.)

Even though Alicia’s decision was framed mainly in terms of a reaction to her personal life, I have to assume she’s savvy enough to realize it’s also a really smart business decision. After all, the Florrick name has never had more cachet and it will probably never be easier for her to get clients than right after Peter’s win.

Plus, I find Jess a delight and all her best scenes so far have been with Cary (“look severe” and “I want more pizza”, etc.).

The potential for more Will/Kalinda scenes makes me really happy. (I died a little when, in the finale, Will was asleep on the couch and Kalinda went and sat down right next to his head. I thought: I’ve definitely read this fanfic…)

The potential for Alicia and Will to redefine their relationship outside of ‘he’s her boss’ is obvious. But I’m actually more excited to see how this affects Alicia’s friendship with Kalinda. I think the two of them have been sleepwalking through their friendship this season. They see each other every day at work, they help each other out, so they can both pretend they’re friends. But what happens when they don’t see each other every day? What happens when they’re forced to go up against each other? If they genuinely do want to be friends, they’ll have to actually make an effort. Things should get interesting…
