I've been watching old episodes of Spooks on a TV channel I didn't know existed (Sony? ...what?) and mostly what I am struck by is how terribly moody the lighting is in MI5 headquarters. I cannot imagine gloomy coloured spotlights meet workplace health and safety standards!
Ahem.
However, it should also be noted that the final sequence of s1 remains flat-out the best season-ending cliffhanger I have ever seen. It's a masterstroke in positive-negative flip. The episode's mini-drama is brought to a conclusion and the UK is saved from nuclear fallout! Everyone's happy and making chocolate buns! Yayyy! Oh, except there's a bomb in the laptop and everyone's going to die. In terms of pathos and tension, it's incredible TV.
