Fic In Review 2009

Dec 31, 2009 14:15

I'm gonna do the Fic In Review meme, even though I only wrote 5 fanfics this year. Whatever. I do memes when I need to decompress. It's a thing.

Skins
Cherry (Emily/Cook, Emily/Naomi implied)
Not Exactly An Epistolary Romance (Effy/Tony, Effy/Cook)

Brothers & Sisters
Do the Wrong Thing (Kevin/Robert)

Make It Or Break It
Breaking and Entering (Emily/Sasha) <-- wow, I wrote a lot of fic about Emilys this year!

Yuletide Fic

favorite story this year (of my own): Cherry (Skins), because I wrote about virginity-loss (which is kind of a squick of mine) and I made it FUNNY, which pleased me.

my best story this year: From a completely writerly, mechanical, 'this is how fiction should work' perspective, Breaking and Entering (MIOBI), because it actually has PLOT and THEMES and god knows those things are usually alien to me.

most popular story this year, in my opinion: Cherry (Skins), probably, but only because Naomily has become popular beyond all sense.

most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: Oh, I can never answer this, because -- and I say this in the least bitter way possible -- no one fucking reads my fic. Trust me, I've been writing rare pairs since 2002; I don't expect readers to just magically materialize.

most fun story: Cherry (Skins). My brain always wants me to write srs, dramatastic fiction, but anytime I write humour/fluff, it's always infinitely more enjoyable.

sexiest story: Pass.

"holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: Halfway through writing Breaking and Entering (MIOBI), I did google statutory rape laws and, yep, found out the pairing I was writing was very, very illegal. It's weird, because I've written SO MUCH incest fic (also illegal), but writing chan freaked me out much worse.

story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Writing Do the Wrong Thing (B&S) made me see both Kevin and Robert completely differently. I also basically talked myself into liking Cook in Cherry (Skins) and now he's my favourite character. Go figure.

hardest story to write: Yuletide mystery fic, by default. I hadn't even reviewed the source material in ~8 years and I came back to it a very different viewer. Plus, it's so stressful to try to replicate a show/movie/book you've spent years idolizing.

biggest disappointment: Not Exactly An Epistolary Romance (Skins) ends abruptly, because I was just SICK of it and wanted it to END. I wish now that I'd put a little more work into the ending.

biggest surprise: I spent WEEKS thinking to myself, "I couldn't possibly write Sasha/Emily (MIOBI) fic; it's squicky and I can't even think of a way to make it work". The fic I did end up writing was the result of a couple of sleepless nights when I couldn't sleep for worrying about work (UGH) and so I just plotted it out to distract myself. I'm still pretty amazed Breaking and Entering actually made it out of my head.

most telling: Do the Wrong Thing (B&S) is the type of story I would write over and over if I just wrote for myself and not for an audience. All that's ever in my head is angst and sex and character detail and angst and angst and angst.

overall: It's funny, because after a prolific few years (2005-2007ish) and then making a concerted effort to write less fic in 2008, I've basically arrived back at the place I was in 2002. The only fic I wrote then were the really odd pairings that NO ONE wrote fic for. Honestly, if I can read someone else's fic, I don't see the point in writing my own.
