ahhh, incest

Via missmomoko: Parted-At-Birth Twins Got Married. Uh, oops?

I was thinking recently about how incest isn't just a taboo in the sense that it's bad. It's taboo in that people don't like to even talk about it; they don't like to acknowledge its existence. Which is something I find strange. We talk about murder, right? We talk about all sorts of horrific ( Read more... )

My housemates were just watching about this on the news. When I heard about it, I didn't really respond. Whereas the two of reacted as if channel four had just announced that someone was eating babies. I do think it is one of the greatest taboos in our society.

(I also concluded, in response to this news piece, that I find adopted children who are raised as siblings falling in love and getting married stranger than separated at birth siblings getting married.)

i'm not horrified by incest, but i get a vomitous feeling in my stomach at the thought of any kind of sexual interactions with my own brothers.

I think about it occasionally in terms of movies/tv shows (House of Yes, for example). But I think for obvious reasons it's just not a pleasant thought to have about one's own family.

maybe it's because i'm an only child, but i really do not get this whole incest-taboo thing at all. (& to be honest the only reason i feel sick at the thought of sex with my own parents is because i really cannot stand them as people half the time.)

The thing I felt most weird about with that news story was how that guy was trying to use it as an argument for putting biological parents on birth certificates, even if it was a sperm donor. But that's a whole other debate.

I tried having a hypothetical discussion with my housemates about incest once (I bring all the fun to the dinner table!) and they just shut the conversation down. They couldn't even contemplate discussing the moral complexities. It was... strange.

Yeah, er. That's very uncomfortable for me. I think a birth certificate should be signed by way of witnessing.

I think maybe including within the baby's medical files who the biological parents are would be useful - that way a true medical history could be gained. But I think legal documents should contain the legal guardians. I think there's history and then there's history and in some ways it's more revisionist to include the biological parents of an adopted or IVfertilized baby.
