My favorite bit, though? Odysseus. Not only does he get the reference wrong (it wasn't cotton, it was wax and Odysseus didn't stuff either in his ears anyway), he uses a *fictional* character known for his *intelligence* in support of *stupidity*. So, I guess the author decided to lead by example.
