L&O: CI Recs

Oct 08, 2007 19:36

So, I was watching a bunch of Criminal Intent episodes this weekend because USA was playing them and I am weak. And, first, zomg, Bobby. Seriously, all the stuff with his mom is just awful. And by 'awful,' I mean 'awful for him, great for me to watch.'

Second, why has no one written a Heroes/L&O crossover yet? It's not like it's a big stretch since both shows take place in New York and Goren is already a mutant anyway. Really. Trufax. Someone should write this for me.

Third, I've been meaning to organize my fic recs for a while now and figured I'd start with the smaller stuff first. And I was in the mood, so.

Title: Pound of Flesh
Author: Sangga
Summary: "A partnership is a curious thing - case in point."

Why: I think Sangga writes the Goren and Eames I'm most fond of, taking the more subtle cues from the show and spinning both a believable partnership and friendship-that-could-be-more from them. Alas, she hasn't written much for the fandom, but what's there is wonderful. And if you're not in the mood for dysfunctional detectives, she writes fabulous Buffy fic as well.

Title: Eyes Froward, Shoulders Back
Author: Spatula Spatula
Summary: "Leather skirts meant date night."

Why: A slightly darker, possibly unhealthier take on Goren/Eames that nevertheless has a grain of truth to it. It's not a love either of them will admit to (that might make it real), but it's compelling and evocative anyway.

Title: The Art of Being a Kept Woman/Schmuck
Author: B. Cavis
Summary: "Alex Eames, emotional bandage of the masses."

Why: And on the opposite end of the spectrum, considerably fluffier Goren/Eames. Taking a concept that could be creepy, Cavis is able to spin it into a story about finding balance and making an unusual partnership work. And her Goren is delightfully dorky.

Title: Kind of Like Evil
Author: Frost Deejn
Summary: "The first case Goren and Eames work together: a daring triple homicide."

Why: It honestly surprises me there is so little fic surrounding Goren's and Eames's first few months as partners, especially considering the teasing hints we've been given in the show. Here we have an Eames who's smart and aggressive and a Goren resigned to yet another partnership that won't last. A nice examination of beginnings with shadings of what's to come.

Title: Yes, I Do
Author: piaffe417
Summary: "Mothers know everything. Alex Eames meets the famous Francis Goren." Circa 'Endgame.'

Why: Francis, always a shadow in Goren's history, became a physical presence over the last season and it's easy to see how difficult her illness must have been for Bobby growing up. It's also obvious her son loves her dearly, making their relationship that much more heart-breaking. Here, we have the two most important people in Goren's life meeting in what could easily be a missing scene from the episode. It's quiet and sad and bittersweet and just a little funny, too.
