1. I finally got food stamps! I've been granted $426 in back payments and will receive $200 a month from then on. That will really cut down on expenses, since most of what I spend on a daily basis is groceries. Thanks be to the DC Hunger advocacy group and in particular a woman about my age who used her connections to get the matter finally resolved.
As it turns out, I filled out my form online and regardless of what the website might say, it does not make matters easier for applicants. Theoretically it would, except budget cuts due to the recession haven't given them the ability to hire people that were intended to handle the online claims. That is why my application packet got stuck in neutral for so long.
2. While I was there, I also filed for DC low income health care coverage and was granted it on the spot. Though I will not be able to pick my psychiatrist, I will at least be designated one and he or she will be able to write out scripts for me. With it also comes prescription drug coverage and dental, two services I intend to make the most of when the plan goes into effect. I should receive a card and an information packet in the mail within 10 days.

As you might have heard, they're predicting anywhere from somewhere around a foot to close to two feet of snow here over the weekend. Everyone was rushing around like mad at the grocery store earlier when I was out, but fortunately we are now completely stocked up on perishables. It's been a long time since I've experienced that much snow personally and I've only dealt with it once. Even though DC is more equipped to handle snowfall than Hoover, this much snow is going to throw a major monkey wrench into everyone's weekend plans.
Elisabeth and I were supposed to assist with a Christmas outreach for the homeless activity tomorrow morning into tomorrow afternoon, and to be quite honest, the way it's looking now, I doubt we'll be able to get out the door. Even assuming we could, it's highly likely the buses won't be running and the Metro will be completely offline.
