It was the dead middle of summer, smack dead in the middle of the heat.
We had had a week of hot hot hot days, the kind where your back sticks to the seats of your leather 1983 mercedes. It was the kind of heat where the road looks like it is covered with a thin layer of water, and the road ahead looks like it is being viewed a poll where someone is making ripples. It was the kind of hot days where everybody squints.
But we were lucky, well actually we were exstatic, The sun was down and church had just let out. Needless to say God was there and brought this excitement to the atmosphere. people were buzzed but they had to leave the church, And over the clatter someone shouted out over the rustle, "Lets go to Denny's." So like an army preparing for war the gang scrambled for cars. People were racing and shouting directions, Car stereo's were blasting.
I went in Her car, it was a 1986 plymouth Dynasty, she called it the "Die nasty." She was Listening to Micheal jackson, but when I made fun of her for it she just said "say what you want but you have to admit that Mike is the king of pop" It wasn't just what she said it was the way she shrugged and said "pop" with this look that seemed to just scream I am flirting with you.
I new her like the back of my hand. I was familiar with her like I know my own scent. We were buddy's , we were pals. Oh yeah sure we hadthe questions. "are you guys dating?", "So Whats up with you and her?" If Iwanted to lay my cards completely on the table, If I wanted to come completly clean I would tell you that I sometimes wonder myself. I mean we have the bst relationship in the world, but is that Love. I mean is that Romance. Isn't there a difference between Romance and Relationship. I Guess I wouldn't settle for just Romance before and now I won't settle for Relationship. I want both.
Right so that is where I stand with her, but let me get back to the story. We were on our way to Deny's. In the Die nasty. After dark. In the Hot Hot Hot Heat. Listening to an 80's copy of Micheal Jackson in the tape deck.
And what do we see, there is a field. with eight to twelve giant sprinkler heads shooting giant arching rainbows of water.
We look at each other with same look of glee in our eyes.
without a word exchanged she pulls the wheel to the side of the road and we get out and run crazy racing through the sprinklers creaming and yelling, yelping and shrieking. We are drenched within a matter of seconds. She is yelling something to me that I cannot recall. I turn to her with a giant evil grin. She is running towards me skipping and shouting. Then she see's my face. She stops dead in her tracks and then runs the other way. "No, No, No, Daniel don't do it." I let out a screach and chase her, running so fast that my sandals fall off, I can feel the squish of the muddy grass in between my toes. I catch up to her but instead of letting herself get caught she turns and tackles me, lunging at me with all her strength. She nearly knocks the wind out of me and we roll over laughing hystericly.
We slowly walk back to the car and drive to Deny's laughing the entire way. When we get there rest of the troops ask about our wet and muddy condition but we play dumb and don't let on that we are even wet at all. This raising even more questions about the nature of our relationship, but Me and her we knew it was worth it. Who cares what other people think we are ourselves and our relationship is unique no one can define it and we are in no hurry to try.
