Aragorn had tried to be as quiet as possible but the heavy iron door still groaned when he opened it. Holding his breath, he halted as he did not want to disturb the prisoner’s sleep, but carried on when it was clear that he had not.

Well no wonder, Aragorn mused. The prisoner was not going to be bothered. He was not even conscious being in deep fever like this.

Aragorn had got quite suspicious when he ushered the Halfling down the dungeon. His fevered heat had been oozing off his skin through the thin grimy layer of his tunic as Aragorn held him by his upper arms. And now the little creature looked even worse. He was sweat soaked, his damp curls pasted on his brow. He seemed to be in a nightmare, delirious, shivering, sometimes mumbling in his troubled insensible state. Despite being drenched in sweat, though, he was unmistakably freezing cold.

“Hush,” Aragorn whispered, wrapping the Halfling with the soiled bed sheet, and scooped the feather-light burden up. The Halfling was burning hot now and Aragorn felt relieved he had not delayed much longer to get this helpless creature out of his cell.

If other guards found Aragorn guilty for saving this Halfling’s life then so be it.
