Nothing horrible or horrific has happened, I've just been socially busy for the first four months of this year. And then there was also the whole going to New Zealand thing.
I've been checking my flist and reading some fic here and there, but mostly I've been watching an insane number of shows and writing fic. Lots of fic. My girl!Stiles fic is up to roughly 60k and is maybe 2/3s done. I'm not entirely sure how that happened.
I've been and seen A Cabin in the Woods and loved it.
I kind of guessed the storyline during the opening credits. Apparently knowing I'm seeing a horror movie combined with Egyptian hieroglyphics in the opening credits means I immediately go, well, obviously this about human sacrifice to appease a bunch of Gods.
I did like the whole bit where the kids chose their own death.
I loved Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins as the guys in control. They were hilarious and totally got the best lines.
The glass elevators they got into and toured the various horrors/monsters reminded me very much of the bit in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, where they tour the factory.
I also loved Fran Kratz. And Tom Lenk as the intern amused me greatly.
Last night I finally got around to seeing The Hunger Games
And I enjoyed it. It was certainly one of the better adaptations I've seen.
Gale, Cinna and Rue were still my favourite characters. I just wanted to give him a big hug when he pulled Prim away from Katniss during the reaping and then when he had Prim on his shoulders when Katniss and Peeta returned to the District.
Rue's death killed me about as much as it did in the book. So many tears.
I thought they did a really good job of showing how barbaric this idea of people getting so excited about kids being thrown into an arena to kill each other was. The scenes where they show Caesar saying 'and this was one of the most memorable moments' and it cuts to a boy beating another to death, were particularly horrifying.
I really liked how they took you into the control room to show how it was all controlled and Haymitch persuading Seneca to go with the whole star-crossed lovers thing was great. I did think it was a shame, though, that they didn't really give you any hints as to why Haymitch is like he is. And, on the same vein, I thought it was a shame that Effie was made far more two dimensional than she is in the book.
Also, Katniss' mum was played by Paula Malcomson who was Trixie in Deadwood. It was really bugging me that I recognised her, but couldn't remember where from.
The shaky-cam during the action scenes was really annoying.
And I don't think they sold the backstory of why Peeta was in love with Katniss.
I'm very curious to see what they do with the second book. I really didn't enjoy it and I'm wondering how much of the first 280 pages they use and if they can make me care (well, apart from when Rue's district salutes Katniss. that made me cry).
Tomorrow, I go and see The Avengers (I refuse to call it Marvel Avengers Assemble because, frankly, that's a really fucking stupid title). To say I'm excited is an understatement. I can't believe it's here already. It seems like ages ago that I was at ComicCon watching the cast being announced for the first time.
I even get to take 3 hours out of my work day to go and watch it. My boss agreed. He's letting me (and my friend that I work with) go and see the 2.30 showing and then come back to work. I'm not complaining, but I am slightly confused by the whole thing. On the other hand, I get to see The Avengers so I'm not going to object.
I'm also glad to see that Once upon a Time has finally got good in the last three episodes. And I'm really enjoying Grimm. How did that get good after such a terrible start?
I'm loving Season 2 of Game of Thrones although I can't believe
that we're about to start episode 5 and Renly hasn't even died yet. I love and adore Arya and Gendry SO much.
I loved Spartacus:Vengeance SO MUCH. Although the final episode killed me.
HOW COULD THEY KILL MIRA??? She was my favourite!!! I was sad about, well, some of the other deaths (Oenomaus *sob*), but damn, Mira was the one where I cried. How much did I love Crixus for standing by Naevia and letting her deal with her own demons without doing it for her? I'm going to miss Glaber, Ilithia and
The Good Wife is AMAZING and the last episode was SO GOOD for me.
