Well, I didn’t manage to read all the books I meant to during Febuary. I’m making a better effort of it this month.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a tad predictable but enjoyable, regardless.
I liked Raine a lot. She was feisty and independent and had a great sense of humour. I liked her independence and also her ability to ask for help when she got way out of her depth. And she got out of her depth pretty damn quickly *g*
Although it’s rather easy to get out of your depth when you accidently put on an amulet that contains an untold amount of power from a rather evil being, which makes you popular with both the good guys who want to protect said amulet and the bad guys who want it so they can use the power for themselves.
I liked the family they gave Raine, including her cousin, Phaelan - a pirate thief - who does have the occasion to turn up at useful times, Piaras, her younger cousin, who is pretty damn powerful in his own right and her godfather, Garadin, who reminds me of Gandalf in a way.
I did love Mychael, the head guardian, who is responsible for the security of the amulet, and therefore, Raine. He’s kind of awesome and I can see why Raine’s fascinated with him.
I was less than impressed with Raine’s on and off again sex interest, Tam. I just don’t see why Raine finds him so fascinating, to be honest.
I was slightly worried that it was angling to create a love triangle and the second book has born this out. I’m so fed up of love triangles that I’m stalled about a third of the way through the book. It’s annoyed because I want to read the plot part of the book, but not the love triangle part.
I’m frankly bored of sodding love triangles. And you know, it’s not so much the fact that it’s a love triangle, it’s the fact that I only see the appeal of one of the guys.
This isn’t the only love triangle I find boring.
Another example - and a perfect one - is the one between Morelli/Steph/Ranger in the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich.
I’ve never understood why Steph likes Ranger so much when she has Morelli but I’m getting to the point - actually, I’m past the point - of thinking she’s something of a bitch for keeping Joe hanging around when he obviously wants them to be together and she still has interest in Ranger.
She obviously has commitment issues - even if she keeps trying to say that Joe has them too - and if, really, Janet Evanovich needs to decide who Steph is going to chose because otherwise readers are going to stop liking Steph.
This was really rather awesome. Although I do wonder whether calling the main male character Po, was such a good idea. I couldn’t quite get the idea of a tellietubbie out of my head.
Although, I have to say, I felt some of the character stuff with Katsa was a bit rushed. But these are minor quibbles, I think, because I enjoyed it so much.
And then I started the other book in the same universe and I’m absolutely bored by it. I think I need to continue and hope it gets better because it’s kind of interesting, but the way it’s written just kind of grates.
March starts here…
Yeah, this was awesome. Utterly awesome.
I love these books SO damn much. As of yet I’ve not read a disappointing one. The only disappointing thing is that I have to wait so long between each book.
It did take me a while to remember what had happened in the previous book. I seriously want to re-read these books and the Harry Dresden files.
I love Rachel’s relationship with Jenks and Ivy.
I have to say, I really kind of love the idea of Rachel and Ivy. I think they are perfect for each other…if Ivy could control her blood lust thing. Although Ivy and Glen are kind of adorable.
But, oh my god, Mattie died. Mattie actually died. I cried SO damn much. Because, oh Jenks *hugs* But then Rachel went small and she hugged Jenks and. And that’s it. She got to hugged Jenks. You have no idea how happy that made me. You know, through the tears.
The appearance of the While Council (or whatever they are called - is the White Council from the Dresden Files) was very interesting and much fun. I did like the idea of lethal white magic and that just because you use white magic doesn’t mean you are actually good.
It’s very similar to The Dresden Files - and it’s something I love about both of them - that they blur the line between what is good and what is bad - it’s more what you do with the power than the fact that you have the power.
I can’t decide who I love more: Al or Trent.
My only problem with these books is that Rachel always ends up falling for the guys I’m not that impressed with. Nick. Pierce. Well, okay, Kisten was kind of awesome and I was upset when he died.
I know that Trent has been a bastard and has tried to kill Rachel but I still kind of love him and I love what happened between them when they were kids. And I think that it must mean something that Trent’s familiar likes Rachel so much.
And Al. Oh, I kind of love Al. I’ve loved Al more or less since he arrived on the scene. Well, maybe not so much when he ripped out Rachel’s throat, but since then, he’s been kind of awesome.
If Rachel doesn’t end up with Ivy then I’d settle quite happily for her to end up with Trent or Al. Because that’s obvious the most important aspect of the books *eyeroll*
Bloody fucking hell. Wow. I spent the last 50 odd pages crying as most of the characters were decimated.
Decimated, I tell you.
He managed to do exactly what I think JKR was unable to do with the final battle in The Deathly Hallows. This battle felt epic. Truly huge and epic and amazing. Despite it being about a limited number of characters you really got a scope of how epic the battle was - the sheer numbers involved and the number who died.
And from about 2/3’s of the way through the book you pretty much knew that anyone was fair game as to who could die - well, apart from Jack. Jack is the only person who I’m sure will survive. Anyone else, well, no. They could die. Which is refreshing because with HP you kind of knew that Harry, Ron and Hermione were all going to survive.
The story continues to be fabulous and it’s not exactly surprising that Jack is going to back to England. He finally had to because the whole Jess storyline needs to be resolved.
I will admit that I’m operating under the assumption that Yamato is still alive because, out of all of Jack’s friends who died, he’s the one who devastated me the most. But yay him for killing Dragon Eye - although, to be honest, we didn’t see a body so I’m not entirely positive he’s dead. It kind of seems a bit too easy. Which is ridiculous because that was one hell of a battle through a castle and Jack got the shit kicked out of him.
I can’t wait to read the next book which isn’t out until August. It should rock.
So, only three fiction and one non-fiction to go this month. And if I want to catch up with Feburary then I need to include two more fiction and one more non-fiction. Woe is me.
A book I need to buy, though, is Girl with a Dragon Tattoo. I shouldn't but I'm guessing I will.
