Title: We Don't Need Reasons
Pairing: Masuda Takahisa / Tegoshi Yuya
Genre: Romance (?), Gen
Rating: PG
Summary: They don't need reasons to take chances.
Notes: I suck at summaries, I see that now. Not what I wanted to post (again), but this one wanted to get written while the others did not. Please enjoy, and feel free to point out any errors, etc. I proofread before I post but most of the time I'm blind to my mistakes. And excuse the vagueness - it's supposed to be that way (or so I say :P)
[Last night
Silent songs from your car radio
float on
As we breeze by the city lights
On our way home]
"Thanks for letting me sleep over, Massu." Tegoshi says as he stops at a red light.
"No problem. Hey, they forgot the soy sauce packets to our takeout." Massu says, changing the subject.
"I hate how late some of these rehearsals can get. What a waste of a good Friday night." Tegoshi replies, tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. "Is the food still warm?"
Massu nods. "The noodles have congealed though, I think."
The light turns green, and Massu turns the volume on the radio down. He looks out through the car windows, eyes hopping from building to building as they cruise the empty highway. They drive for several minutes until the bright lights and tall buildings become dim lampposts and sleeping little homes, Massu's house at the far end of the neighborhood, unlit but still inviting.
"It's been a while since you last slept over, ne?" Massu asks.
"Longer than I wanted, but." Tegoshi whispers to himself. Turning to Massu, he says, "I know. Did Massu miss me?" He wheedles.
"Huh," Is all the reply he gets.
They eat their late late dinner (sans the soy sauce) by the kitchen counter and continue dessert at Massu's bed. Tired, but not enough to actually fall asleep right away, they surf through late night channels while finishing their hot chocolate (for Massu) and tea (for Tegoshi). Eventually they fall asleep, heads bent together as Massu exhales chocolate air onto Tegoshi's hair.
[This morning
Bleary eyes greet each other
As hands blindly grab
For warm sheets kicked at the foot of the bed
'Let's sleep in a little more,' you say
'Better get up, 'else we'll be here the whole day']
"Wake up, I'm freezing." Is all Tegoshi says as he tugs at a runaway blanket and covers both of them with it.
"Ngnh, what." Massu mumbles. He rolls on his stomach, burrows his head deeper into his pillow for a good ten seconds before turning his face to Tegoshi, eyes chinkier than usual. "I'm awake."
Tegoshi smiles. "You have pillow marks on your face," he remarks, poking Massu's cheek.
"Maa, stop it," Massu protests and swats at Tegoshi's hand.
"I thought you'd wake up earlier than me, ne."
"I did. And I tried to wake you up as well but you sleep like a log. So I just went back to bed."
Tegoshi sits up, ruffling his hair. "Well, we're awake now, so."
Massu giggles. "Your hair looks like a bird's nest,"
Tegoshi snaps his head, "You're one to talk, your hair's sticking out in all directions." He looks closer, "Look! You even have a cowlick," He laughs, pretends to spit on his fingers, and tries to run them through Massu's hair in an attempt to flatten it.
"Ugh, gross, stop it." He swats at Tegoshi's hands again, before finally getting up and resting his back against the headboard. Tegoshi mirrors his actions.
Massu wiggles his toes and bumps his foot against Tegoshi's. "Did you sleep well?" He asks after a moment.
"I did. Thanks again for letting me sleep over." Tegoshi answers. Both of them stare at their pajama-clad feet in comfortable silence.
Massu, what is it that we have? Tegoshi would have liked to ask. Instead, he voices another thought.
"So, what shall we do today?"
[By the afternoon
In the tiny kitchen
It feels like a hothouse
Two bodies passing through
And through; and through
In a space made for one]
"This place is a mess." Tegoshi notes.
"It's because you were here. Normally it would be pristine and shiny, you know." Massu grumbles, picking up a discarded napkin on the floor.
"Haha. If you're asking me to clean this up-"
"Oh you will. Because I said so." Massu cuts in before handing Tegoshi a dish towel.
"Massu is so demanding!" Tegoshi wails, putting a hand over his eyes before sauntering away, out of the tiny kitchen.
Less than five seconds pass and he walks in again. "Kidding~" he chirps, and starts picking up empty containers on the counter.
Massu waltzes past him. "Good, I'll be in the living room reading the newspaper, then."
"Hey!" Tegoshi cries and tries to grab a hold of the back of Massu's shirt.
"Kidding~" Massu chirps. "I don't have today's newspaper anyway."
"You don't even READ newspapers, Massu."
They scavenge Massu's (shockingly understocked) fridge for breakfast, Tegoshi happy with eating a slice of bread, and Massu, some leftover gyoza. Massu discovers that he DOES have newspaper (last week's copy though). He gives the sports section to Tegoshi and keeps the entertainment section for himself. They eat at the small kitchen table this time, Tegoshi putting his feet up against Massu's lap, and Massu pushing it away. He keeps on doing this until Massu huffs and lets Tegoshi get away with it.
Tegoshi, what is it that we have? Massu would have liked to ask. Instead, he voices another thought.
"Clearly, you've forgotten your table manners."
[Just before nightfall
A conversation by the balcony
'This is the best time,'
while the trees sway forward as if to listen
'Cherish it, it doesn't happen often,'
As a lone lamppost flares to life.]
Tegoshi and Massu had just finished an early dinner, after a whole day of doing nothing but lounging around. While waiting for his turn to use the showers, Tegoshi wanders over to Massu's balcony. He looks at the view before him, Massu's quaint neighborhood showing signs of settling down: a couple with a bag of groceries unlocking their front door, an old lady waving goodbye to a family of four as they pull away from her driveway, the lights going on in the house across from them.
A pleasant breeze drifts by, making Tegoshi put his hands inside his jean pocket. He fumbles around and pulls out a scrap of paper, his fortune from their takeout last night. He laughs after reading it, and shakes his head. You will take a chance at something in the near future. "Yeah, sure." he says, putting his hand out the balcony to toss the paper away.
A hand plucks it from Tegoshi's before it can fly away. "Don't litter, Tegoshi." Massu says, appearing by his side. Massu is dressed in fresh clothes, hair still damp, a towel draped over his shoulders.
"Sorry. You done?"
"Yes. Your turn now." Massu replies as he turns and goes back inside the room, depositing the fortune into a small trash bin. Tegoshi follows the scrap of paper with his eyes as it zig-zig-zags down the bin.
He takes his chance. "Massu, what is it that we have?" He asks.
[At the stroke of midnight
Shoulder to shoulder
Hip to hip
Let me say good night
Let's meet up as we dream]
"Hmm, what do you think?" Massu answers, picking up the conversation like it hasn't been brought up hours before.
"I'd like to know myself," Tegoshi replies as if he already knows what Massu is talking about.
Massu stares at the amber criss-cross patterns the bedside lamp is making at his ceiling. He is lying on his back, with Tegoshi beside him, his back against Massu's left arm. The room is entirely quiet and, even though they left the balcony door open to let the night air in, there is no noise from outside, the rest of the world already in quiet slumber.
"Well, when you find out, let me know." Massu says, nudging Tegoshi on the shoulder.
"Massu, I'm being serious," And Tegoshi rolls over on his back as well, adjusting the thin blanket covering them.
"Me too."
"It's confusing." Tegoshi says, staring at the ceiling as well.
"Why?" Massu asks.
"It just is." Tegoshi sighs. "But, I'm fine with the way it is, ne."
They stop talking for a while after that, with Tegoshi moving just a little bit closer to Massu before he stills.
"Tegoshi, are you still awake?" Massu asks, several minutes later.
"Hmm?" was Tegoshi's drowsy reply.
"I can't give any reasons. For now. Is that ok?" Massu whispers, clutching his share of the blanket.
"I'm happy enough with that," Tegoshi answers. "Thank you, Massu." He adds, before finally succumbing to sleep.
