WEEK 9 - DAILY PAGE 7
I always set my alarm to radio on normal occasions, instead of the obnoxious buzzer. I thought it would give me a better start to the day to wake to classical music than it would be to wake to a grating bleep.
One day, I woke up to a strange sound. There were instruments, but they weren't the instruments that I was used to. Most noticeably, there was actually the presence of a human voice. Most annoyingly, it had a bizarre twang to it, something that was familiar yet foreign to my sleepy senses. I got up and looked at my radio. It was blaring out country music instead of classical.
I later discovered that several days before, KMZT had been broadcasting that it was going off the air, due to falling revenues from the classical format. I didn't hear this until it had finally happened, because it had receded so far in my life to only be an alarm; I hadn't actually listened to it for a while. Thankfully, LA has another classical radio station [KUSC], but I'd always preferred KMZT because of the cleaner format [more music, less chatter, which I care more about now because I understand it]; the end of it marked an ending of my previous era of utter adoration for classical music. I wasn't to blare out Mozart in the house for a long time.
