WEEK 9 - DAILY PAGE 6

There was an odd interrim period of time when we were still with the first piano teacher, and my sister had become of piano-playing age. She began learning piano at the age of four, half my age when I began. I suspect to some degree that the early start might have been the reason why she never caught on with it later on; piano was always a part of her life, it seemed like the norm.

I remember a time when we both had lessons from the first piano teacher; they were supposed to be consecutive, but there was no specified order to if I or my sister would go first. Typically, whoever had practiced least would be most reluctant, but since we were both not exactly hard-working, we fought to go second.

The first piano teacher gave us stars when we were familiar enough with a piece to "pass"; when we got five or so such stars, we would get a treat. In hindsight, this was something of a child-appeasing gesture, rather than anything that actually encouraged us to play better. It was a kind of pleasant side-boon, one that inevitably occurred every once in a while.

I remember Johann being sad one time when we got popsicles as treats, because he wanted one too.
