Ed watched, frozen in horror as Mustang stumbled forward, groping at nothing. He tripped and fell, blinded by a transgression not even truly his own. Ed tightly clenched his jaw against the rising fury, clinging to a self control that threatened to slip from him entirely.
He had earned his automail, with hopeless dreams and foolish pride. Even his teacher had toyed with the Gate, intending to play God. It was painful and ugly, but the truth often is. Mustang was different, though. To do this to him of all people, it was cruel. It wasn’t fair.
Later, he’d say it wasn’t about revenge. Later, it would be only the absolute necessity of it that lived in his memory, and any bitter satisfaction he felt at taking them down would be relegated to illusion. Right now, all that crossed his mind was every friend left battered or destroyed by these monsters. He’d watched them tear lives asunder far too long, and his guilty conscience happily rattled off the names of lives he couldn’t save. As he watched Mustang stare out with stunned, unseeing eyes, Edward Elric seethed.
