It’s a battle of wills. They fight as surely as they live, bickered words and a few scant breaths away from blows. The subtraction of a desk between them has done nothing to quell their mutual animosity. The confines and sanctuary of a home that is well and truly theirs has fueled their aggression as much as their affection. Roy is certain they must both be masochistic, to honestly entertain this as a long term solution.

His hips still ache from the viselike grip of Ed’s fingers, and he’s thankful for the dark fabric of his uniform, shrouding the love bites that dapple his skin from the rest of the world. They parted ways that morning on the tail end of an argument he can’t quite remember, and Roy half expects to find himself assaulted by biting words the moment he returns home.

He is greeted only by silence and the soft glow of a fire burning merrily in the next room. Boots off, his coat carefully hung, Roy peeks into the living room to find Ed sprawled on the couch, a book draped open across his chest. He almost looks innocent like that.

“Edward?” Roy’s voice is barely more than a whisper, but long lashes flicker anyway. Burnished gold eyes settle on him, and a lazy smile winds across Ed’s lips, all animosity forgotten. Something tightens pleasantly in Roy’s chest because it’s these rare, perfect moments, the in between spaces full of warmth, that are worth all the rest.
