Rating:  PG-13
Universe:  canon
Words:  301
Summary:  A hunter stalks his prey...
Warnings:  none

The hunter gazed at his prey, not more than a few meters away. A bead of sweat tricked down his cheek, his entire body tensed with the effort of remaining perfectly still.  His eyes flickered to the other members of the herd; none of them were aware of his presence. This was dangerous prey he was stalking, and success depended on absolute surprise. There were so many things that could blow his cover, and he did not want to return empty-handed.

So he watched and waited, biding his time and calming his nerves. The crucial moment of the hunt was rapidly approaching. He would stalk in a few more feet and then pounce. Bit by bit, he began to inch forward, his approach silent as death itself. His eyes were locked onto his quarry now, never straying, taking in the beast’s every movement. Finally he was close enough to strike, and he readied himself to attack. The blood thundered through his veins, priming his body to explode into action at any moment. Ready…and…

A sudden alarm call rent the air, stunning the hunter. His quarry turned, looking around wildly until its eyes settled firmly on the predator. It snorted, stomping its foot into the ground in a threatening display. The hunter sighed; he would catch nothing today. The entire herd had seen him now, and his prey would be too wary. It would probably not let its guard down until tomorrow at least. He had failed.

Miroku grinned sheepishly, his right hand still poised in attack position. He had been so close! But Sango’s formidable glower spoke of unending pain if he continued the hunt, so he backed down and went on his way. He was skilled at his craft, but no hunter was perfect.

Besides, there was always tomorrow.
