Mitch was asleep aboard his ship, his snoring was matched only by the loud ping of the three dimensional radar system.
"Mitch are you there." Crackled the radio.
Startled, he erupted from sleep and forced himself to a state of alertness.
"Yep... completing my patrol.. almost reached the Martian Pericentre."
"Great... me and some guys are going out tonight at the moon.. you should come."
Mitch relaxed once he realized it was his friend on his intercom.
"I'll let you know... my commander is out to get me and sends me on these crazy patrols."
"Don't even bitch about it... you should see what sort of bullshit Sean and I have to put up with on Earth!"
"You don't get it... there's nothing glamorous about space... the sun washes out the stars and your most often by yourself up here!"
Mitch leaned towards the intercom and spoke quietly into the intercom.
"These damn politicians... they still think the Martian Colony is a threat...but what can they do to us really? We beat them the first time around so I doubt we need to continue the blockade and sanctions."
"Your right... and if they did try something again we would nuke their asses! Well if your feeling up to it come out... Lunar woman are something to behold."
"Will do." Mitch signed off and leaned back to finish his nap.
Ping.
Mitch adjusted his eyes towards the spherical radar display. An unidentified object was flying into space. He did not blink until the ship's registration came across his computer screen. It was martian. Flipping several switches and buckling himself into his seat, Mitch steered his ship towards an interception point.
He attempted to hail the ship several times while getting closer. No answer, and after studying its movement and speed, he realized the ship was trying to evade him. Mitch turned his weapon system to stand by.
The ship suddenly vanished from his radar.
Surprise and confused, Mitch turned a knob to strengthen his radar's reach.
Nothing.
Mitch looked out into space through his front view, trying to make sense of the encounter.
Quite gradually tiny points of light began to shine through the thick darkness of space, in the hundreds. Then the thousands.
Stars, thought Mitch.
That night a group of officers went out to the bar. Mitch was not amongst them.
Around the same time a young boy could be found ranting about a spectacle of light he had seen while playing with his dog earlier that evening. He described beams of light that erupted in a big flash, like the fireworks he saw on earth. His parents gently disregarded it as a clever fable and told him that he should look into writing as a career. He left dinner with his dog Spot and rushed back to the Lunar park, an enclosed bubble with perfectly manicured lawns, plenty of climbing trees, and a great big pond filled with all sorts of fish. He laid on his back, the grass prickled, imagining all that there might be in Space. At that moment the stars shone through and the boy was reminded of the flash he saw earlier...
