Entertainment

As INTJs we are supposed to be unusual (warped?) in our sense of humour amongst other things. This raises the question... What types of entertainment do you like in terms of books/comics/music/movies? dislike?

How are we different from other types in our choices?

(I'm asking this partly because I'm curious and partly to get ideas.)

My preferences )

Hm, good question.

Books: I'm very word-oriented, so I will sometimes take good writing over a good story. If the prose is elegant and gorgeous, I don't really always care if the story is bad. Genre-wise, I love well-written fantays and science fiction. My preference is more towards epic and series than one-shot books. George R R Martin is brilliant. So is Lois McMaster Bujold. I despise Douglas Adams, but Pratchett is great. I also like well-written historical fiction (like Margaret George or Dorothy Dunnett) and I'm currently tearing my way through Jasper Fforde's books. I like turn of the century classics, as well.

Comics: Varies. SimPos is awesome. I read Two Lumps, Queen of Wands, Scandal Sheet and occasionally Ozy and Millie. Calvin and Hobbes and Bloome County, of course. A couple of the news paper ones, but I rarely read them.

Music: relatively eclectic, but focusing on good voices and more melodic lines. Lots of female singers.

Movies: Dramas. Things with resonance. I do like comedies, but I also like twisted comedies, rather than slapstick. I cannot stand most TV sitcoms. Hate action flicks, not a big horror fan, unless they're more thriller and psychological. Not an s/f movie fan, either, with some exceptions. I admit to a fondness for movies based on shakespeare.

And oooh. Embarrassment. I am not too empathic, but I get so embarrassed for characters when they're stupid. (My comm professor in grad school would say I get caught up in the drama).

So I dunno hat I'm way too different, but it varies. I do have little use for some things.

And to clarify -- I don't care for the embarrassment thing, either.

Me too. The only sitcom I really got into was Family Guy, because in some ways it represents everything most sitcoms aren't. None of the characters are particularly likeable, nor is the portrait of life given therein a picture-perfect one where everything turns out great at the end of each episode. My favorite character, Glen Quagmire, is certainly one of the the worst of the bunch: the two best moments of the series, as far as I'm concerned, were him hitting the "abort" button whilst trying to seduce Lois, and his immortal declaration of "Dear Diary...JACKPOT." That show was twisted humor at its simple best. Ostensibly new episodes are coming out in April due to the success of the DVD box sets. Andrew and I have the whole series on DVD, and I'm sure we'll be chomping at the bit to get the newer seasons when they come out.

Coupling was also cool initially, but I don't like the direction in which the series has gone.
