Songs and Life

There are so many songs in the world. We all find songs and feel that we can relate to what is going on in the story of the song. We just manipulate the song to fit our own circumstances. What a song means to you may be the complete opposite of what it means to someone else. Take "Cryin" by Aerosmith as an example. Here are the lyrics so you can analyze them.

~There was a time
~When I was so broken hearted
~Love wasn't much of a friend of mine
~The tables have turned, yeah
~'Cause me and them ways have parted
~That kind of love was the killin' kind
~Now listen
~All I want is someone I can't resist
~I know all I need to know by the way that I got kissed
~
~I was cryin' when I met you
~Now I'm tryin' to forget you
~Love is sweet misery
~I was cryin' just to get you
~Now I'm dyin' cause I let you
~Do what you do - down on me
~
~Now there's not even breathin' room
~Between pleasure and pain
~Yeah you cry when we're makin' love
~Must be one and the same
~
~It's down on me
~Yeah I got to tell you one thing
~It's been on my mind
~Girl I gotta say
~We're partners in crime
~You got that certain something
~What you give to me
~Takes my breath away
~Now the word out on the street
~Is the devil's in your kiss
~If our love goes up in flames
~It's a fire I can't resist
~
~I was cryin' when I met you
~Now I'm tryin' to forget you
~Your love is sweet misery
~I was cryin' just to get you
~Now I'm dyin' cause I let you
~Do what you do to me

~'Cause what you got inside
~Ain't where your love should stay
~Yeah, our love, sweet love, ain't love
~'Til you give your heart away

~I was cryin' when I met you
~Now I'm tryin' to forget you
~Your love is sweet misery
~I was cryin' just to get you
~Now I'm dyin' just to let you
~Do what you do what you do down to me,
~baby, baby, baby
~
~I was cryin' when I met you
~Now I'm tryin' to forget you
~Your love is sweet misery
~I was cryin' when I met you
~Now I'm dyin' cause I let you
~Do what you do down to , down to, down to, down to
~I was cryin' when I met you
~Now I'm dyin' to forget you
~Your love is sweet
~I was cryin' when I met you

One person may take the song as a song professing the irresistible love from the woman to the narrator. The woman is so amazing and her love so incredible that this guy is lost without the woman. The most amazing verse of that song is "'Cause what you got inside / Ain't where your love should stay / Yeah, our love, sweet love, ain't love / 'Til you give your heart away." The guy finally realizes that he can't truly experience the full capacity of this girl's love until he gives her his love in return. So it is a song professing love.

Another person may take the song as a hate song. The girl abused him so much in their relationship that he just can't stand having her love anymore. The love is good, but not worth the bad things that arrive with it. He tried so hard just to receive her love, and now that he has it, it isn't what he expected it to be. It is not as good. So, he wants to get rid of it. "Your love is sweet misery." It is nice but painful.

A simple enough song taken two different ways, and it can be analyzed many more ways. Next time you're listening to music and want to put it on ur profile or away message, consider putting an aside after the lyrics. People will be able to understand what you got out of the song instead of just a random interpretation.

Why do we look to songs to describe our lives anyway? That is someone else's thoughts on their own experiences or maybe even fictional stories. Why don't we just say what we are feeling? What are we afraid of? Who are we trying to protect? In my experiences, things are easier once things are out in the open. I'm not saying that you should say every little thing, because mystery is very attractive. However, too much mystery is a turn off, even in friendships.

Don't take life for granted, but "don't take life so seriously or you'll never get out of it alive. Write that down." (Van Wilder)
