Ok, now that I've gotten that out of my system I will now describe the first day of school, which went surprisingly well.
I went to Dunkin' Donuts before school with Brian and Mags. I wanted to eat there because I was worried I'd have a different homeroom teacher who wouldn't let us eat in class. But we saw the lists posted at school and we're all in Mr. Gallagher's homeroom again! Woohoo! It's pretty much the same crew, except for the L people who got bumped into the homeroom next door. We stayed in homeroom until 9:00 and got lots of schedule crap. Annnndd...our lovely Malden High School agenda books! They're actually really cool. All the events are written in the assignment part and the student handbook is at the back. However, they spelled Rosh Hashanah wrong in a couple places and they didn't put Passover in the assignment part. Stupid WASPs. I mean, um, don't we just love our agenda books? They also wrote "Glue and Gold Day" instead of "Blue and Gold Day." So what are we supposed to do? Glue gold items to ourselves? Sniff glue? Don't confuse us with your typos! Another cool thing about the agenda books is that we can tape or glue our IDs in them instead of wearing them on lanyards. Score! So on to classes...
Concert choir was first. Same old, same old. Apparently we're having chorus in the other band room this year, which is a little weird. From what I remember, the acoustics are a little better in there but the piano sucks. I'm sure Mr. Cole has thought of something though, because he seems to like moving around pianos. I'm not sure how the chorus is going to sound this year. I'm really glad Mr. Cole is being more selective about the people who get into concert choir though. Ideally, I think he should be able to take one person from each section and spot check the group during a rehearsal.
Next was play production. I started a game with me, Brian, Brian, and Jess called "How many people do you not like here?" Shut up, I'm not mean. Just really sarcastic and cynical. Like Daria! We each got 12 or 13 people. Ms. Clapp talked about plays we might be doing for the fall show. And then we started to introduce ourselves, but the bell rang before I got a chance to do so. Bummer! All I wanted to do was stand up and introduce myself and have people laugh at me. I'm an attention whore.
On to Chem II. Oh boy. We were all sitting in our assigned seats and talking when Shawn said to me, "After I drop this class, you'll be the only white person here." So I looked around and realized, to my horror, that it was true! Every person in that room, with the exception of me, Shawn, and Ms. O'Neill, was Asian. Oh, stereotypes! I'm pretty nervous about that class, especially since I won't really have any friends in it after Shawn switches out. I need someone to answer questions and be my lab pardner. Like, "Emily, did you pay attention when Ms. Grillo was explaining the lab?" 'Cause I sure didn't.
Band. We didn't do anything because I guess Mr. Lutz assumed no one had their instruments. Somewhat true. There's this girl in the class who transferred from Boston Latin and she used to play clarinet in concert band. So I helped her play some stuff on the bass clarinet, which Mr. Lutz is making her play.
Lunch was weird because we got down there five minutes early and the cafeteria was deserted. But some people from my table eventually showed up. Still, the cafeteria was less crowded than usual. I wonder if the other lunches were different.
Next was AP Spanish, which was really fun. Ms. Simson is so cool. And I really like (most of) the people in the class. With a couple people it's like, "What? Why are you here?" I won't name any names, but let's just say a certain orange-skinned, green-haired Oompah Loompah was in the class (Tyrone's description, not mine).
*cue scary music* On to physics! It was pretty obvious from looking around the class that we were all petrified of Mr. Neily. We've heard stories. So many stories. Plus I sat near the door in Ms. Grillo's class across the hall last year, and I could sometimes hear Mr. Neily yelling. He called the valedictorian last year a dimwit. Should be an interesting class. I just hope he doesn't make me cry.
AP English! Woohoo! I'm really glad I finally get to have Ms. Clapp as a teacher. I've known her since freshman year, but I've never actually been in her class. We passed in our papers and discussed what we'll be doing this year. I think it will be challenging, but rewarding.
After school I went to Ms. Nagle's room to discuss the whole calculus situation.
