Chapter 5: Work

Jun 08, 2005 10:24

The more I think about it, the more bizarre my job really seems. I only spend about a third of my time at the office doing anything that would count as real "work", that is, that would actually benefit the lawyers, clients, or secretaries here. Most of the rest of my time is devoted to self-improvement: learning about various different facets of the law. I suppose I feel a bit guilty about being paid to read and learn about secured lending or copyright infringement, but honestly, there's not that much else for me to do here. And no one's complaining, really (although I constantly imagine the secretaries resent me for "slacking off") - so I suppose I'm okay for now.
Today my "work" has been interrupted quite a bit by rolling black-outs. We've lost power here every 20 minutes or so, making it difficult to use a computer or make copies. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see this entry deleted in a moment's notice.
The only thing of interest that has occurred recently was the recent win by one of my co-workers of a radio contest-thing. I guess WIOG (the hit music station) gives free lunch and a limousine ride to people who call in to the station during certian times or something. I don't really know the details; I can hardly stand top 40 radio anymore. Since my co-worker was able to take 5 people with her to lunch, the whole office here got to ride in a limo and eat lunch for free at Ruby Tuesdays. It was actually a very nice deal, and I got to hear my name read over the radio, something that's never been done before.
Anyway, the whole experience taught me that I need to start signing up for contests more frequently. I might get a free lunch.
