score +1 for the hipster points. i just got an invite from someone i don't even know to a really hipster party, more hipster than the wrct spring show afterparty with all the indie rock kids dancing to hip-hop in tom's basement. i would totally go if i were in pgh, because i am a total wanker.
it's been interesting seeing my roommate's observations on and interaction with chinese culture and my instinctive reactions. she likes to make sweeping statements about "the chinese" a lot... i think she does have some familiarity with chinese culture - knows more chinese history than i do - but she approaches it with sort of an arrogance, like she understands everything because she's studied it in a classroom. she doesn't, but meanwhile it's been interesting to note that my prejudiced self responds, subconsciously and reflexively, "oh, she is just a gwai lo, what does she know?" she knows a fair bit, in fact, but she misses some subtleties that can't be conveyed in the classroom, especially since most people in america study other cultures with a certain sort of arrogant attitude. this arrogance definitely comes off in conversation, though it's not her fault.
i got really sick yesterday.
i'm feeling better today, though.
i have also lost a bit of weight (at least, my boobs have totally shrunk) - don't ask me how. i told someone that i would lose weight in china, but he didn't believe me. well, i'm not skinny now, but i lost weight. ha. i would guess a good 5-10lbs. too bad i'm still teh fat. whatever, though, i'll get unfat by biking.
