I don't know who's watched S6 and who hasn't, but my US DVD set arrived on Friday and I caught up with the last six episodes that haven't been show here yet. Wow. It got good.
To be honest, that quality was a little unexpected, because I'd been pretty horrified by the first half of the season and had given up on it, waiting until Sam came back. And then when the second half kicked in and I started watching again, I wasn't all that drawn in by the stories or impressed with the writing. I've only watched each of the last seven eps once, but I will be going back to at least Mommy Dearest today (I don't know what it was about that one that clicked with me, but I really liked it) and was fascinated by the whole Cas backstory. Dean's ongoing tragic life added another layer with Lisa and Ben, which was a shame because I liked Lisa. And I went through the final ep on the edge of my seat (which I absolutely wasn't expecting). One key thing about these last few episodes is that the writers seem to have regained one of the things that they lost for a while there: the ability to come at an idea with a fascinating and exciting twist that turns what could otherwise be predictable into something intriguing and absolutely worth watching.
In the end I managed to watch all of this with no spoilers. You wouldn't think it was possible with the internet, but I avoided journals and sites and twitter feeds and anything that I suspected would purposefully or accidentally give the game away. Knowing nothing about it was such a good plan, and the plot twists and emotions unfurled with no preconceptions or clues. It was great.
Operation No Spoilers for S7 is now underway, particularly as I understand S7 started in the US a couple of days ago. If Sky are nice to us, we'll get it in Feb, but I expect they'll be just as crap as they were this year and it won't start here until June. Still, I know I can do it, so that helps.
