This setting up a computer lark takes for-frickin'-ever! So far I've installed the new hard drive, run the recovery, installed most of my main applications, run windows update after windows update, restored a metric tonne of files, and am running some system checks and healthcare stuff. There's still more to come, but this will do for today/yesterday.
One of the things I've realised is that I really need to sort out my files. I've done that with my music already, spending time deleting duplicates, sorting into artists, getting album art, etc. That took several days, on and off, doing it while watching telly. My video files are generally fine. But my pictures and documents are a mess that'll take some focused effort to sort through, and then have the confidence that I can replicate those changes on my backup drives without thinking I'm losing anything I don't want to lose. But really, I do have a load of crap in those areas due to hoarding, and I can't find things when I need to. Any similarities to my house are purely coincidental.
Still, progress is good! No more 'OMG DO SOMETHING!' messages is good! More hard drive space is good! (Will have well over 400GB left to play with once I've finished faffing, which will do me for a while to come yet). Having my laptop and files back only a few hours after I managed to break the netbook's power connector is good! Breaking the netbook's power connector is bad! (Will need a replacement thingy, plus some soldering which I haven't done in over twenty years - oy).
I'm not yet decided if I think all this is unnecessarily complex or truly excellent that we can do all this with such wee components.
