Evolve or Perish

Given the content of my last post, I'm sure it won't come as a great surprise to anyone that this morning was pretty much a complete loss. On the bright side, though, I have yet to have anything worse than a general malaise and disorientation. I've had much worse hangovers.

In the shower I went through the "OMG I'm 27 and not doing anything with my life and complete failure!" stage, the panic attack, and came through into the feeling better and having things to do phase - uh, mostly. Post-drinking and post-birthday blues are sort of winning over quiet confidence, but I've got it to go on.

Today is Darwin Day - the anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, who you might remember as the author of On the Origin of Species and co-proponent of the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection.

Next year will be his 200th birthday, but this year is important as well, for July 1st will be the 150th anniversary of the presentation to the Linnean Society of On the Tendency of Species to form Varieties; and on the Perpetuation of Varieties and Species by Natural Means of Selection by Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace - a co-presentation because these two men had arrived at virtually identical conclusions entirely independently of each other, and the discovery of this fact led them both to publish quickly and together.

I had always planned to write something big and important today, but ol' Jack Daniels last night saw that nothing coherent was going to come from my brain today, so instead I'll just raise my glass of squash to the old man and be grateful for what he did for biology.

drinking, anxiety, evolution
