I'm so bad about updating my journal these days, so bad! In my defense, things have been kind of busy with Old English translating...and translating...more translating... We just totally finished with the Life of Saint Edmund, and now we've started Bede's Account of Cædmon, which is multiple times harder than Edmund! What the fuck, the syntax is aaaaaaaaaaall over the place. Mega messed up.
On the plus side, one of the words for 'the English people ' is Angelcynn. Isn't that pretty? There are a lot of fun words like that in Old English. Like nydgestealla, which means 'comrade in battle.' And wingal is 'flushed with wine.' And þeodguma, which means 'man of a nation.'
The 'þ' is called a thorn. It's just the [th] sound. So þing is 'thing.' Well, pronounced a little differently, but more or less.
Old English is tough, but awfully fun and interesting.
