Glee Rewatch 2014: Frenemies

Dec 08, 2014 11:09

Things that happened:
  • Santana and Rachel are acting super close and when Rachel brings Santana along to a magazine shoot, she finally figures out something she could do with her life: she auditions for Rachel's understudy. Rachel is beyond furious and they have a huge fight (two huge fights actually). Rachel ends up moving out. Kurt just wants to sit down and eat pizza.
  • Artie and Tina are tied first place for valedictorian, so they get into a bit of a feud to see who will win. Things get kind of over the top, and after hurting each other pretty bad, they both change their tune and tell the people to vote for the other person. Which means that neither of them get to be Valedictorian and it goes to Blaine instead. Oops.
  • Kurt thinks that Elliott is trying to take over his band. He very deviously starts getting friendly with Elliott to figure out his motives. Turns out that Elliott just thinks that Kurt's pretty awesome, and he really just wants some cool people to hang out with. And he knew what Kurt was doing the entire time, for the record. Who knew.
Sporadic thoughts while watching:
1. Santana is really being quite sickly nice in this scene. Probably should have known that it was foreshadowing.
2. Ah yes, the famous Tuesday lunchtimes that are somehow only being mentioned five seasons in...
3. "That's a really flimsy segue, Artie."
4. God, I am so sick of Becky.
5. Tina Warrior Princess.
6. There is so much fourth wall break in this episode it's ridiculous.
7. Tina is actually wearing like, imitation chain mail when she confronts Artie. Going into battle?
8. There's a lot of interesting camera technique in this episode - there are several times in which the characters speak directly to the camera. It's very confronting.
9. "I mean, he's a psychopath!" No, Kurt... that's you...
10. "It's really hard being a star." Well I have been missing diva Rachel.
11. Will is actively encouraging the fight between Artie and Tina. Fucksake.
12. Oh my god Kurt, you creepy, bro. Hilarious though.
13. The way they play that scene is so fucking fantastic. "Said Beyonce right before she left Destiny's Child - " "She was better - " "Anyway...." and "I mean you could easily be the front man of our band if you wanted to be do you."
14. Do they even audition understudies? I mean, wouldn't it make more sense to pick up some of the girls who made it to the callbacks but didn't get the part? (And there's more than one understudy, for the record.)
15. I mean, it's harsh enough that Santana is auditioning for the understudy, especially using a song that means so much to Rachel, but she actually goes as far to mimic her performance way back from Sectionals. Santana talks like she's not in the wrong for auditioning, which she's not, but she is deliberately antagonising Rachel by auditioning how she did. So, there is a bit of ambiguity.
16. And Christ, that is a short dress.
17. "One high school produced both of you?" Yep, and a whole lot of other professional standard performers to boot. Funny, huh?
18. That was a really weak intro to I Believe in a Thing Called Love.
19. But I don't even care because fuuuuck yes.
20. You get up on that stripper pole, Kurt. Werk.
21. You know, Kurt sounds fucking fantastic and he should totally do more rock songs, but he is so not a rock performer. Adorable, darling, so-not-hardcore performer.
22. Stripper pole, though.
23. Kurt just wants to eat pizza and make espresso.
24. "Unlike you, I can be popular in high school and still make it big after graduation." Ain't that the truth. You hear so much about kids who push themselves through high school by believing that their tormentors will never make it big after high school (and yes, Rachel is one of these people), but it doesn't always work like that. Karma doesn't exist - people can be as big dicks they want and still get what they want later on.
25. This whole episode is just kind of dragged down by the Tina/Artie plot, to be honest.
26. "Zombie Fanny!" "Ghost Fanny, actually." ...?
27. Every Breath You Take is actually the most creepy fucking song.
28. But that is a fantastic performance. I love the imagery - especially the moment in which Santana stands on the platform directly above Rachel. She's on top, in other words.
29. "One, two, be super cute!"
30. Hard not to ship them just a little, to be honest.
31. "But sometimes I feel like things just get handed to me!" So. much. fourth wall breaking. (And, well, you are the New Rachel after all, Blaine.)
32. Possessive Blaine makes a reappearance. Imagine the sex when Blaine gets possessive. Mmmm.
33. "Literally cannot wait to watch Principal Sylvester assassinate you."
34. Poor Kurt looks like he got run over by a train.
35. But they're both so upset over this. :(
36. I am not used to these episodes ending sadly WHAT IS HAPPENING.
