Poland (parts 2 and 3)

Jun 12, 2007 10:48

Well, a lot has happened since my last post, so I apologize for not keeping this up-to-date.
So I thought I'd start with some differences from America

-grociery stores sell milk warm
-there's no tipping at resturants
-bars close at 11pm or midnight (not at 2 or 3am)
-root beer doesn't exist over there!
-dubbed movies are far more absurd
-ALL cereal comes in bags
-marijana is not as frowned upon
-beer tastes good
-pop cans are labled 'light' instead of 'diet'
-a 'quarter pounder' ACTUALLY is a 'Royale with cheese' (or McRoyal)
-Google sometimes starts up translated in Polish
-water is served with carbonation as much as it is served without
-water in restaurants isn't free
-driving recklessly has a new meaning
-most people older than my generation don't speak English

Quick summary:
Things didn't work out with the girl from the previous entry (she's dating a different person from our American group). I made a lot of Polish friends that I will try to stay in contact with. I traveled WAY more than I had planned (Italy, Denmark, Germany, Sweden) ...PLEASE PLEASE feel free to ask me about these trips *preferably in person* I have SO many great stories to tell and pictures to show!!

After school got out, in Warsaw, I went to Italy by myself (the original plans I had to travel with others fell threw for, literally, no reason). First, I visited some friends that were on a different exchange from Detroit. They were staying in a small Tuscany town called Volterra. I was there for a few nights, and there was a small Renaissance-type festival happening. We all went to Pisa for a day, which was REALLY boring because there is only one place to visit there and NOTHING else. One night, I was invited to a real Tuscan dinner by my friends. That was amazing! It's a four course meal, complete with plenty of Italian wine and breaks in-between each course. The whole thing lasted about three and a half hours!

After I left Volterra, I went to Florence. Truly a magnificent city! Side note: for any of you who remember Hannibal Lecter's drawing in 'Silence of the Lambs' "That is the Duomo seen from the Belvedere". I actually have that photograph now! I won’t go into geeky details about the different buildings I visited, but the city as a whole has a vast cultural richness that was overwhelming!

Now I'm back in the USA

In other news, my dad is trying to convince my grandpa (his dad) to consider assisted-living. I don't really want to get into details, but it's safe to say that I'm not happy with the situation.

On the horizon: I'd like to move out of my parent's house and have a place to fall back on when I'm not in Detroit. I need to find a job! ...and of course, make up for four months of not spending time with friends!

Now I'm spending time with my family in Florida and will be back in Saginaw on Saturday. If anyone wants to make plans, don't hesitate to call me or message me (I have no preference).

"America. FUCK YEAH!"
