A Kiss To Build A Dream On

There was a most dangerous room in Sho's and Kei's household.

It was the bathroom.

The problem was that their bathroom had neither window nor lock. If you wanted to see anything inside, you needed to turn on the lights, which would also shine through the door faintly and mark the bathroom as occupied. Unfortunately, neither of the two men had ever quite learned to knock, and things got just that much more complicated with Kei constantly failing to switch on the lights.

There was even a very reasonable explanation for this. Kei was awake at night and walked around an apartment filled with atmospheric, indirect light. Plus, he was a vampire and could see in the dark. The sudden brightness of turning on the lights inside the purely white bathroom usually felt strangely like someone was trying to carve his eyeballs out with a spoon. It was not a pleasant sensation as he knew from experience, and the memory of that was something that made even him shiver after all these years. Though admittedly the whole experience had probably been worse for the desperate lunatic who had meant to rob his seemingly easy victim in the hopes of selling the freshly harvested eyeballs. Humans tended to claim healing powers in the strangest of concoctions. Afterwards, Kei had made sure never to risk passing out from starvation in that particular area of Mallepa again - or turn on bathroom lights, for that matter.

Truth be told, leaving the lights off had led to a handful of awkward nightly encounters with Sho, who was still not able to stop his first thought from slipping over his tongue to be voiced when it clearly wasn't something he should have ever considered saying out loud. As of now he was fifteen years young and self-restraint was a foreign word to a boy not yet quite grown into his own lengthening limbs. At this point in time, he already stood slightly taller than Kei, who had kept his blonde hair long in memory of times when Sho was small and would seek the comfort of cold arms and a golden curtain shielding him from the world without second thought.

The lights snapped on, making Kei flinch.

“You look like a girl from behind.”

Awkward Silence fell like an axe, beheading Comfortable Silence and not bothering to hide the body.

Kei glanced at the mirror above the sink and took notice at the look of horror dawning on Sho's face as the boy realized he had spoken out loud. He was wearing his pyjama bottoms and had not yet shaken off midnight's hold onto his need for sleep. And even though he knew he had made a terrible mistake, he couldn't tear his brown eyes away from Kei.

Blonde hair spilled over a slim back like liquid gold, hiding the inked wings Sho knew to be there. He was unable to stop his eyes from tracing down the length of it, his heart skipping a beat as naked skin peeked through the strands. Where the last tip of hair touched Kei's back, the vampire's slim figure bled into a sinful waist and narrow hips. With Kei bent ever so slightly forwards over the skin, Sho could just make out the hint of milky thighs blending into firm, round buttocks underneath thin, black fabric. It was enough to make him forget, for just this second, that Kei was male. Male with an easily wounded pride if you pushed the wrong button.

Sho had pushed all the wrong buttons at once.

There was a flash of green eyes followed by a feeling of weightlessness before Sho smacked into the opposite wall, the first hint of arousal knocked out of him as his ego was badly bruised.

“What the hell...?” both of them exclaimed the second Kei emerged from the bathroom. The hazy, tempting vision was wiped from Sho's mind as he was faced with the vampire's rather flat-chested, male front. Never in a million years would he admit that Kei was a lot more desirable from this side.

The short burst of anger and violated dignity evaporated as Kei looked at Sho, rather crumbled and miserable on the floor. Instead, he was flushed by guilt at having hurt his friend, especially when the boy smacked his hands away instead of allowing Kei to help him up.

“Sho...”

“Don't SHO me!” the teenager pouted, sensing his friend's guilt and feeling so confused and lost about the situation that he decided to exploit the vampire's shame just this once and feel bad about it later. “You smacked me into the wall, for fuck's sake!”

“Language...” Kei mumbled, a very faint blush rising to his cheeks only because he had fed not long ago. He couldn't help feeling like he still ought to act fatherly - at least when it came to Sho's manners.

Sho, however, would have none of it. “Don't think you'll get to parent yourself out this one, Kei. Damnit, you hurt me!” He felt bad for saying it at once. Kei's hands, once again reaching out to touch and reassure himself that his friend was alright, flinched back as though now afraid of inflicting more damage. But the words were out, and as though he was playing chicken on a deserted road, Sho felt he couldn't be the one to avert his course, wrong and stupid as it might be. He needed to prove himself to Kei one way or another, and all his efforts would go to waste if he admitted to having made a mistake. It would be a long time until the boy realized that this was what growing up was really all about.

Avoiding to look into Sho's eyes, Kei pushed his long hair back. “I'm sorry...” he admitted, nearly unable to give an unnerved groan as Sho just crossed his arms and pointed out that sorry wasn't enough this time. It was at this point that Kei knew he was being played. But this was like playing chicken. If he didn't play the game, he would be stuck with a sulking Sho and he'd never get rid of the parent-role in this household. He needed Sho to grow up and become more independent... maybe this was the way to do it? Somehow he had his doubts. But what was he to do? “How about a drink, then?”

Sho perked up at once and it was all Kei could do not to look smug. Knowing he had Sho by the balls even when Sho tried to manipulate him felt oddly satisfying. He knew the teenager craved to feel bad-ass and grown-up, but so far Kei had never allowed him to get an alcoholic drink while in his presence. Truth be told it wasn't that he thought the first touch with alcohol would be inappropriate at fifteen, not when half the teenagers in Mallepa did much worse at that age already, but he had a feeling that a drunk Sho would prompt him to break out into hysteric laughter, which would only lead to more sulking later on. Maybe it was time to take that risk now.

Not an hour later they found themselves in a bar. Sho was doing his best to strike a bad-ass pose, which naturally made him look like a dumb fool, not that Kei was inclined to correct him. He himself found it endearing to see Sho so effectively driving away the attention of every female save those the teenager couldn't afford anyway. For a few precious seconds Sho fumbled with the sunglasses that had nearly made him run into a lamp post until he was ready to admit that they were a ridiculously stupid idea in the middle of the night. Then he was ready to reach out and take the glass Kei offered with anything resembling dignity.

Loud music thrummed around them, bodies writhed on the dance floor and Kei had a hard time not smiling at the thrilled grin breaking through Sho's defences for a second or two as he took a sip. Kei almost felt bad for having handed him something non-alcoholic. Almost.

“Aw, fuck...” Sho groaned, and Kei was ready to fire away some lame excuse in case the human had caught on to the scheme, but then he noticed Sho wasn't looking at him. “Don't look behind you now...” he groaned miserably.

Curious, Kei paid a little more attention to his surroundings, allowing his senses to spread. He could hear giggling girls, whispered pick-up-lines, smell arousal and vomit, and then he finally became aware of what Sho was talking about. There was a group of boys Sho's age not far behind him, laughing under their breaths. He recognized their scent; Sho had hung out with them a couple of times because they were apparently to be considered rather cool. And then he realized they were laughing at Sho. Green eyes narrowed ever so slightly as he detected the malicious undercurrent of their laughter.

“We hung out...” Sho murmured, looking self-conscious and awkward and impossibly young and fragile. “They dared me to kiss a girl... because, you know, I... kind of haven't yet... but I couldn't. I mean, it wasn't my fault, the girls were just... stupid” he finished lamely.

Kei felt a pang of sympathy. His boy struggled so much to copy the image of a man he wanted to be that he always ended up tripping over his own feet. The vampire wished Sho would simply be himself for once, because he had a feeling that the honest awkwardness and embarrassed blushing would attract just the right kind of girl as opposed to the over the top posing and macho pick-up-lines. Still, having failed and being the laughing stock of those worthless vermin obviously crushed Sho.

That was something Kei wouldn't stand for.

“Do you trust me?”

Sho looked up from his drink and the contemplation if he could make Kei buy him enough so he could get pissed and not feel quite this stupid. Kei was looking at him, and over the vampire's shoulder he could see the guys looking at them, too. He didn't miss the fact that they were checking Kei out - and just as Kei trailed cold fingertips up his arm and leant in, Sho realized that they thought he was here with some blonde, long-haired hottie. And Kei knew.

Kei smelled like fresh rain and wild, dangerous beauty. His lashes were surprisingly long from this close, framing his large eyes so that the green irises seemed to glow. There was tenderness in his gaze. There was not a single imperfection on his pale skin. The angle of his jaw was a pathway Sho suddenly longed to explore, just because it was so close.

The loud music faded into the background as Kei tilted his head to bring them together for a kiss that would soothe all the aches of Sho's ego; a kiss that came with no hooks attached. Just one friend helping out another. The moment before their lips met stretched into eternity. A curious sensations tingled along Sho's skin; anticipation, excitement and nervousness chasing each other. Yes, he trusted Kei.

The vampire's lips were surprisingly soft and warm as they barely brushed against Sho's, a whisper of a kiss; teasing and promising. The human's breath caught slightly. He could feel a gentle smile dancing on Kei's features and almost wanted to pull back just so he could see it. Cool hands came to rest on his shoulders. Sho closed his eyes, reducing his world to everything that was Kei as he moved in to seal their mouths together.

It wasn't a sensation he had been prepared for. Sho knew how lips felt on his cheek. Hell, he knew how Kei's lips felt on his cheek. This was different. A shiver went down his spine and for a moment he tensed. The hands on his shoulders moved slightly, rubbing, squeezing gently, soothing him so he could relax and embrace the feeling. While Sho had pressed their mouths together, Kei was the one in complete control of the kiss. Whatever he did, it was marvellous. There was something intoxicating about the way their mouths moved over each other, something addictive about the way Kei would nip on his bottom lip every so often, something thrilling about each change of angle, each lessening and increase of pressure. Without consciously realizing what he was doing, Sho wound his arms around Kei's waist and pulled his friend closer. With their bodies coming to rest easily against each other it felled as though the kiss had been a bud so far. Now it bloomed into something more than just lips on lips. The chaste touch became a kiss, and the kiss felt like the moment between waking and sleeping, when your dreams are as good as reality.

As they parted slowly, the one kiss gently separated into a series of small, chaste touches. The sound and feel of these tiny, tender kisses were something Sho felt himself growing addicted to. When Kei sighed ever so softly, ending their kiss and pulling back slightly, Sho felt almost ashamed at the urgency with which he wanted to pull Kei back. But he smiled, because he knew it was what a person was supposed to feel after kissing a dearest person; the desire to go back for more.

It took some time for everything to come back to them; the loud music, the reason why they had kissed, the heat of people packed tightly together, the smell of alcohol. The tingling stayed on their lips long after they realized Sho's guys had already wandered off now that they lacked a target, and it took even longer until both of them trusted their voices enough to speak so they could agree on going home.

Sho reached up to touch his lips constantly, still completely entranced by his very first kiss as Kei steered the car towards their apartment. The vampire chose not to comment but smiled faintly instead. They were both unaware of the thoughts and feelings they had already stowed away unconsciously for much later; this kiss between good friends with all its innocent intentions something to build all their dreams on.
