I started reading Day Watch today, which has so far turned out pretty damn amazing. I thought I'd be bereft without my Anton and his selfish jealousies, but it is actually quite awesome to see the world through a Dark Other's eyes. And then when one of the Light Others pops up it's like, "I know them! They rock!" but with an added tinge of, "ENEMY! SMITE!". Or not.
Major spoilers for the book (not the film... because the film Day Watch is the second part of the book Night Watch. That confused me for ages.)
The ending for the first part was a bit... anticlimactic, in a way. It was another one of those Anton-moments when you realise, aw, shit, they had it planned from the FIRST PAGE. I can see why Anton gets annoyed. Alisa doesn't get annoyed, as such. She just sort of goes, "Well, fuck it then, I'll DO BATTLE!!"
I kinda like Alisa, though. She takes no crap (except from Zavulon, but then everyone has to take crap from him if they don't want to be maimed), and she is sweet when she falls in love. She's also really good with kids, and doesn't want them to have nightmares even though she could feed off that power. *hugs her* I was also really grateful to the author for recapping what happened in the last part of Night Watch, because I had completely forgotten about the Prism of Power and the fact that Alisa was Zavulon's girlfriend all the way through, gets high on Power and is demoted, and is actually called Alice in the film.
The second part is... wow. That's all I've got so far. I am confused, bewildered and a little shaky, but I am loving every second of it. It made me remember why I was so sad they'd cut Anton's minidisk obsession out of the film (there is like a paragraph about this, but I ADORED it in the book. And he would be cute with earphones). I know it wouldn't have any real significance in the film except as a handy way to introduce the soundtrack, but it was a groovy character thing. Film!Anton gets his torch, so I guess they're even.
And... well. Last chance to turn back if you want to read unspoiled.
Tiger Cub. OMFG Tiger Cub.
I just... I couldn't believe it. This part of the book is mostly from the PoV of some unknown Dark Other with enormous power (and amnesia, w00) and so it's described in the same way that any Dark Other dying might be described from the PoV of the Light. It doesn't really bother them that much.
So yes, I am shocked and horrified. And I so want Anton to get Sveta and Olga together so they can all get their vengeance on. Except Gesar probably has a Big Plan, so it'll have to wait. GAH I love this book!
