Summary: All of his waiting finally pays off

Kim Ryeowook sat on the steps of the New York Public library, his fingers curling absently around the edge of his scarf. It was an odd sort of winter day - one of those where it’s cold, but the sun is warm and there’s no wind. He was glad of it, because he was waiting, and had been waiting for quite a while now. His butt felt numb under him, but he barely noticed. His eyes scanned the street in front of him, wondering if maybe today he would see him.

Ryeowook sighed, wondering what on earth had come over him. He’d been waiting here nearly fifteen minutes, and all for just a glimpse of one extremely handsome man he had absolutely no chance with?

“This is ridiculous.” He muttered, getting up from the hard stone steps. He hitched his backpack further up on his shoulder and silently berated himself for sitting here waiting like a teenage girl with a crush.

Sighing, he pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and started calling his best friend. He began walking down the steps, his forehead creased in concentration as his fingers pressed the series of buttons to connect him with Zhou Mi.

“Wookie! Did you see him? Did you talk to him?” Zhou Mi said excitedly, not even bothering to say hello.

“MiMi, I been sitting here like an idiot for 15 minutes and he hasn’t even walked by yet! Why did you convince me to do this? I feel like a fool! Even if I had seen him, he would have kept on walking, you know why? Because he’s completely out of my lea--” Ryeowook was ranting, and not watching where he was going. He stepped off the stairs and onto the sidewalk and collided with something warm and solid.

“Oh, excuse me.” A voice said softly. Ryeowook stumbled back a pace, mortified that he hadn’t been watching where he was going. His mouth flew open in shock as he looked up to see the person he had walked into. It was him.

“Ryeowook? What’s going on? Hello?” He could hear Zhou Mi calling through the phone, and Ryeowook pressed the end button and forced his mouth shut. His heart was slamming out of his chest.

“Uhh…I’m sorry….I wasn’t looking where I was going.” He stammered.

“It’s all right.” The man smiled at him, and Ryeowook felt his mouth go dry. He stood there like a statue for a few seconds until the man’s smile began to falter in the awkward silence.

“Oh…uh….hi, I’m Ryeowook.” He said, shifting nervously on one foot.

“Hello, Ryeowook. My name is Lee Sungmin.” The gorgeous man said, and Ryeowook couldn’t help but smile.

“It’s nice to meet you, Sungmin-si.” Ryeowook said politely. And then another endless stretch of silence fell as he grasped for words….anything that would make him look suave and confident rather than awkward and pathetic.

“Would you like to have coffee with me?” He blurted out, unable to stand the silence another second. Something sad and hesitant flashed in his beautiful brown eyes, and his smile faltered. Instantly Ryeowook felt as if someone had reached out and strangled him. He’d said the wrong thing, and now he was about to get rejected.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t.” The man said. The words weren’t harsh, they sounded kind, but the rejection stung all the same. Ryeowook nodded and stepped back, allowing him to pass by.

“Oh. Okay.” Ryeowook managed to say. He gripped his phone tightly in his hand and was about to turn away and make a run for it when Lee Sungmin spoke again.

“Maybe another time?”

Ryeowook lifted his eyes and looked at Sungmin in surprise. There was a small smile on his face, and Ryeowook’s heart leapt out of his chest.

“I promise I won’t knock you over next time.” He smiled, and Lee Sungmin’s smile widened.

“That’s good. How about the Paris Baguette on 32nd street?” Sungmin asked. “4pm tomorrow.”

Ryeowook nodded, mentally burning the time and place into his memory.

“Good. See you then, Ryeowook-si.”

“Have a good day, Sungmin-si.” Ryeowook smiled as he watched Sungmin walk away. Excitement flooded through him and he practically ran all the way home. He had a date with Lee Sungmin, the most handsome man he’d ever laid eyes on. He could barely wait to tell Zhou Mi what had happened.

Maybe he’s not out of my league after all.
