[Phoenix comes into the office much later, looking rather beat. It felt good to be ‘home’ where it was warm and where he felt somewhat safe. That, and now that Maya was in the city he had someone to come ‘home’ to.]

Well that could have gone a lot better-

[Before he can continue whatever he was going to complain about, Phoenix notices Kiba on the couch. Well, that’s not something he was expecting to see.]

...Who is this and why are they sleeping on my furniture?

[Kiba was secretly awoken by the noise, but decided that this was the Nick Maya had so ferverently talked about and to keep quiet, pretending to stay asleep.]

[severalstomachs]

[Admittedly Maya had fallen asleep herself in the chair while she was waiting for Phoenix, so his voice startles her and she jumps, causing her to fall out of the chair. Pulling herself back up, she seems impressed that Kiba can still sleep through all of that. It didn't matter, though, she had some convincing to do.]

Welcome back Nick!

[Seems like a smart move to act like this isn't a big deal...]

That's just my friend, Kiba. He, uh, he doesn't have a place to stay...

[Phoenix could already tell where this was going and he gives a groan.]

Maya, please don’t tell me you’re actually volunteering my office to homeless people. We barely have any room for ourselves; that bed can only hold two people!

[thechosenwolf]

[Kiba 'wakes up' a little bit before Phoenix says that.]

I can sleep on the couch, you know. Or on the floor.

[severalstomachs]

Yeah, he can sleep on the couch!

[Then Maya is reminded of something rather important.]

Oh...wait.

[Allow Phoenix to finish that thought.]

The couch IS the bed. It pulls out. What sort of people do you know that keep actual beds in their offices?

[And now that he thinks about it, the sleeping on the floor comment strikes Phoenix as odd]

You’d really sleep on the floor?

[thechosenwolf]

[Kiba shrugs.]

If it means I can stay where it's warm, that's okay.

[Silly humans and their innability to sleep on the floor.]

[Maya tries to give Phoenix her best puppy dog eyes. Poor Kiba, reduced to sleeping on the floor.]

Please Nick? He's my friend and he's really nice! ...Really!

[Phoenix sighs and begins to think it over. It’s true that not having any sort of shelter in this sort of weather sucks. A lot. You’d also have to be pretty desperate if you’re willing to sleep on the floor. If this were back home, Phoenix would have no problem saying ‘why not’ and allow this stranger to stay or at least stay until he could find his own place.

However, this wasn’t home. Phoenix had a hard time trusting strangers here. Having seen people he once figured to be sane suddenly snap and attack others really put him on the defense. Sure, this guy seemed normal enough, and Maya seemed to really like him. But…it could also be a trick of some sort.]

We’ll have to see. How do we know we can trust him, Maya?

The only thing I can give you is my word.

See Nick? His word! That's the best thing anyone can give anyone!

[The fact that Phoenix hasn't said 'no' yet is enough to give Maya hope. He was considering it! ...or, he at least seemed like he was considering it.]

[It’s no use, Phoenix isn’t heartless and if he were in Kiba’s shoes he’d want help, too. With a heavy sigh, he decides to at least try it.]

...Fine. However, the minute anything goes wrong, you’re out of here. Understand...Kiba, was it? Anyway, I’m really trusting you right now. If it weren’t for Maya, I probably would have thrown you out in a heartbeat. You really owe her right now.

[He looks over at Maya and smiles.]

[Maya is trying very hard not to scream out in excitement. She did it! She actually did it! She helped someone out of a bad situation! Oh, it felt great. Hell, she didn't feel like Kiba owed her anything, just the fact that he had a place to stay now was all she needed. She happily returns a smile back to him.]

Don't mention it!

[Oh, and let's not forget Phoenix. If it weren't for him, this couldn't be possible. In her excitement, she jumps at him and gives him a big hug.]
