Memphis film-maker Craig Brewer's film Hustle and Flow is drawing record attention at Sundance this year.
Craig Brewer This guy made his first film, The Poor & the Hungry, basically writing it in a local bar named the P & H (abbreviation of the same name), which is two blocks from my apartment, a place I used to hang out in a lot, too. The manager then was an ex-truck driver named Wanda, who wore huge hats, a white wig, and much costume jewelry. She remembered everybody's name and called them both by their name and the ever-ready "Honey".
Craig has done a few programs at the library. I met him then and have met him out a few times. I feel obliged to say that this straight family man is hot as hell, that I go all cross-eyed when I see him. On more than one occasion, I've shaken his hand and let it linger there longer than normally expected. Hehehe. He is extremely down-to-earth and curious and speaks to people as if he assumes they've got as many fascinating projects going on as he does, full of interest and easy-going, natural camaraderie.
OK: Enough gushing. He just rocks and I'm happy that the local guy's done good ... .
