One of the essay topics I want to tackle is punk as an aesthetic and a life philosophy far broader than the music and fashion usually thought of, kneejerk-style.
I did some research for books today and found a few that a co-worker in history/sociology was nice enough to say she'd order for the library on my suggestion. Here are a few of the ones I am most excited about:
"Punk Rock: So What?: The Cultural Legacy of Punk" edited by Roger Sabin (Routledge)
"The Philosophy of Punk: More Than Noise" by Craig O'Hara (AK Press)
"We Owe You Nothing, Punk Planet: The Collected Interviews" edited by Dan Sinker (Akashic Books)
"Pretty in Punk: Girls' Gender Resistance in a Boys' Subculture" by Lauraine Leblanc (Rutgers UP)
It'll be a while before they roll in, though, and I want to do some mind-chewing already, though.
How would any of you describe "punk" outside of mosh and mohawk and a two-digit guitar chord? Any ideas? Would appreciate anything to chew on!
