The Kid with His Face in the Book, Wondering about Having Fangs

Mar 04, 2004 18:29

This job wears me out a lot. Too much customer service, too much the book mall. I have to say, though, that I can't help but smile when I help a kid like the one I just did.

Her glasses were round and VERY thick. She seemed break-neckedly nervous. Her hair hung in dark strands, swinging beside her eyes. Very carefully enunciated: "Could you show me the Greek mythology (pronounced "mythOHlogy") section?"

When I did, her face broke like she'd just run aground on a island of rock candy.

When I was 5 or 6, living in the boonies, I befriended my encyclopedia set. What I got OBSESSED with was mythology. I read every article in the set on Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Norse myths. My head was full of creatures, half animal and half human, folks cursed to see the future and not be believed, tasks completed in unbelievable steps.

My life ain't that much different now. In my own head.

The kid who lives between his or her ears and whose eyes are wide because of it.

Good to get a reminder!
