Do you remember where you read those stories? They sound awesome. Sinister mirth is exactly what I was going for, thank you, they definitely seem to enjoy making life miserable for people moreso than other road bogeys.
I don't, sadly. I think it was a book I found at a friend's house, or my parents' house.
Puts me in mind of Black Shuck. I had a creepy moment while driving to work a few weeks back. I don't live in East Anglia, but I used to, and I grew up with stories about the black dog. I usually drive to work in the dark, and there was a massive black dog with glowing eyes being walked by a tiny elderly woman. I can thank my headlights for that moment, but the dog's eyes really did seem red.
Okay yeah, that would creep me right out. *shivers* While I didn't grow up on many local legends or the like, I devoured every mythological and folklore book I could get my hands on ever since I could pretty much pick up a book. So yeah, I know about the Black Shuck and how disturbing that would be.
And while not quite the same, we've got the Michigan Dogman. (And for extra creepy, I'm from the same hometown as the guy who wrote that song, and know many of the places mentioned in it.)
