Just a silly little thing...

hastily written the night before it was due at far too late at night for how tired and sickly i've been, and its certainly not the most serious piece ever written, but maybe you'll like it...

If you were stranded on a desert island with only one person and one item, who and what would you pick and why?

In the unlikely event of being stranded on a rock of an island, a disaster in

which I was still allowed to somehow choose a person and item to accompany

me, I believe that I would bring the president of the United States of America and

an international cell phone with GPS capabilities. By doing this, I would most

assuredly be swiftly rescued from said desert isle and be returned to normal life.

After all, no one is going to leave our president out on a desert island, and with a

GPS phone, I could tell everyone where we were stranded. Crisis averted.

However, in the event that rescue was not an option, my choices would

change dramatically. Instead of the president, I would rather bring my girlfriend,

Meghan. This wonderful woman has kept by my side for nearly eight months

now, and I cannot regret a day of it. No offense to the president, as I'm sure he'd

make a nice co-exile, but I think she would keep me company considerably

better. Concerning my item, I would probably choose a lightsaber. Yes, I mean

one of those things from Star Wars. I've always wanted one of those, and I'm

sure it'd come in handy.

I would choose Meghan for several reasons. First, when looking for a

companion on a desert island, one wants a person who has certain traits. They

should be a team player, intelligent, resourceful, entertaining, likable, and, most

of all, contribute towards survival. Meghan does all of this and more. At the top of

her class, she has proven herself to be exceptionally bright. She is musically

gifted, especially with the piano, and is extremely amiable. She is well cultured,

knows several languages(including Latin and Italian), and, to contribute towards

survival, is an expert in first aid and is training to become a doctor. Couple that

with the fact that we are extraordinarily fond of each other, and the choice

becomes a fairly obvious one.

A lightsaber is also a good choice as a companion. Not only would it be

entertaining, with its glowing blade and futuristic noises, but it would also provide

a variety of benefits. It could provide light at night, and perhaps, although I am

not sure, a means of starting fires easily. It could provide endless hours of

entertainment, as well as a means of defense against the attacks fo wild

animals. It could be used to hunt or gather or to craft clothing or shelter out of

raw materials quickly and painlessly. It really is an all purpose tool when used

responsibly, as all sci-fi superweapons should be.

Given these things, I honestly don't think that being stranded would be all

that bad. I mean, after all, with the right company and a nice beach, doesn't such

an exile turn into a sort of vacation? Sure, there would still be things that needed

to get done, but the lightsaber would ease those burdens, and besides, a

transcendentalist-style retreat to the basics of life doesn't seem like it would be

all that bad. I believe that Meghan and I could cope with the challenges of life,

meeting them head on, lightsaber in hand. Here's to getting stranded!
