Okay, that DOES it. Yesterday SPSS (the brand new patched version) overwrote one file with another. Today I watched it delete all the data in a file right before my eyes and then autosave it without asking. That's quite a bit of work that just disappeared there. Then again, maybe I shouldn't complain. Just before the data disappeared I'd been trying to merge it into another file, and got a bunch of completely wrong numbers -- not numbers that SPSS pulled from the wrong place; numbers that came straight the hell out of nowhere.
And to top it off, I just got an email from the university advising us that we can now purchase the new version of SPSS.
I've got to get that book on transitioning from SPSS to R. We're rapidly moving into "fool me twice" territory and soon I won't even be able to complain about it on my livejournal.
