What he remembers and what he thinks he remembers years apart. And what you see when you look at him is a reflection of your own guilt. If anything he knows theres something you feel you owe him and he's learned to play off that. I love Nikolas to death, but I know him well enough to know that he knows how to play us like a fiddle and it works cause we feel guilty not just cause of the lake, but because he never got a minute with mom when we all did, and because Daddy never looked at him really cause all he could see when he looked at nicky was mom dying giving him life. We all let him cause he's our baby.
